Another blown 3VZE head gasket

First off this is the Best Toyota information site, hands down. I'm towards the tail end of my first head gasket job on my 94 pick-up, been a long process, taking my time so it's done right. The original head gaskets were replaced under the recalled before I owned the truck, it now has 135k miles and besides the head problems is in nice shape.

The problem area on mine was at the #1 piston, fire ring blown out, took a little chunk out of the top of the piston, but seems ok. I've gone with Felpro gaskets "hope these are ok", new head bolts, had the heads checked, resurfaced and new valve seals installed. While I'm in it, doing all the timing componets, knock sensor and wire, also refurbed injectors, hopefully all will be fine when I'm done and I'll have a better running, more reliable truck.

Got it fired up this past weekend, started right up, don't see any leaks. I've driven it about 50 miles so far, idles smooth, seems to have a little miss starting around 2k rpms under no load, hoping this is maybe due to 10 month old gas. I did notice while setting the timing "with the jumper on" the mark wanted to jump around a couple degrees, any ideas?

TiCain,

While checking and setting my timing the other day before and after my dyne run, the timing mark did jump around a little, so I set it to the point where it seemed to "bottom out" of not fall any lower than around 11*-13*. Maybe go the the autoparts store and get an octane booster or use a bit of seafoam in the tank, then use an injector cleaner (the one Redline makes is the only one to contain acids and solvents that actually clean) check your plugs, wires, and all that good basic stuff. The Redline injector cleaner works better than any of the other's i've used over the years on all the family vehicles.

I'm glad to hear you didn't/dont have any issues with the heads for now, I think I'm getting close to needing the heads done on my baby.
