Just wanted people's opinion on the noise my engine makes. I replaced the timing chain less than 200 miles ago, and think I may have been expecting it to be silent once that was done.
The notorious "clacking" of the chain against the cover definitely went away. Replaced cam and crank gears, chain, guides(metal on drivers side) and tensioner. In the video, you can hear the somewhat constant tick, or clack, or knock, or whatever else you call it. It seems to be much quieter once its up to operating temperature. Also seems to go away when over 3000rpm.
Any and all input appreciated. Im hoping Im worried about nothing.

1994 Truck, 22RE, 5-speed, 165,000 miles, new timing chain, oil changed every 5000 miles, valves last set around 140k miles. Runs great, no bogging, decent power, starts right up, etc. Thanks in advance!

maybe loosen up the acorn nuts holding down the valve cover see if that helps. they torque to a very low inch/lb if i recall correctly...just back them off a little.

Anyone else? I didnt replace the valve cover rubber donut things under the acorn nuts when I put it all back together. Im sure the new ones would be much taller than the squished ones I have now.

Thanks guys. Got a half a turn on two exhaust manifold bolts, and found a small leak in a weld near the catalytic convertor, so I welded that up. Did the 'ol screwdriver to the ear trick, and its definitely louder on the top end, than down on the oil pan/block area. Ill check valve lash sometime in the near future. Thanks!

The valves seemed to be tight actually. All were around .008, intake and exhaust. Could too tight of valves cause noise..? I left them for now, its been 30k miles without any problems so....

I know on my 22RE, the injectors make more noise than anything else in the engine bay. Those babies just tick away.

Sounds weird but check to make sure your spark plugs are tight and not loose. I've had a spark plug come loose and make a similar noise.

Shouldn't the exhaust valves be .012? I wouldn't have them that tight (.008 like your intake). You could potentially burn a valve....

Yeah, I was a little concerned with them being that tight as well. The noise is definitely louder in the morning, and as everything warms up, pretty much goes away. Anyone have a weird, tinny rattle only under a load? Mine sounds almost like a heat shield rattle, but only if the motor is under a load. If Im cruising along and let off the gas, it completely goes away. Any ideas?

Load induced rattle is usually spark knock. Check your timing, fuel filter, tune-up stuff. A head gasket on its way out may cause this as well in my experience.
If it is more like a knocking it may be piston slap from broken rings or just worn. These are long stroke motors and are more susceptible to piston rattle like this because of the side loading. My 22re's all get quieter as they warm up and this is what I attribute it to.

I have pulled apart a 250k mi 22re that was running fine but getting loud and almost all the compression rings were broken in about 5 pieces but still in the piston grooves.
