Alternator upgrades on a 22re
according to my local part store there is no upgraded alternator for my 22re.
the current one is quite new and works properly but with a winch now and soon to be more lights and such i want more power.
what adaptions or options have others tried out?

this subject has probably been covered about a million times, between here and pirate4x4.
you could get the stock alternator rewound, but the gm alternators are probably going to be cheaper.
i went to advanced auto, with a coupon, and spent maybe $140 for a PM47294, which is a new powermaster 140/80A alternator, based on a delco 12si... they call it a one-wire, but i have it wired to work with my alternator light on the dash.
used a trail gear gm mount, that i altered to improve.
you could get the stock alternator rewound, but the gm alternators are probably going to be cheaper.

it's actually rather confusing, because there are several different ways to go about it... especially with the wiring.
you'll see people leave the stock toyota fuseable link in, but upgrade the wiring going to the link... the link is rated to blow at less than the stock wiring is already rated at, so upgrading that wire to the link doesn't gain you anything... and of course a 140amp alternator output is much greater than anything the factory wiring can handle.
the alternator that i used comes with a fat wire that's a direct shot to the battery positive cable, per the directions: "one wire alternators require no jumpers from the internal regulator to the alternator battery post.... a wire should run from the output terminal to the battery positive post, hence the term "one wire" ".
no mention of a fuseable link in that connection, so you are left wondering whether you need a fuseable link, and if so, what rating? 140 amp, to match the alternator max output?
i have an agm battery, which can handle 140 amps, but you wouldn't want to put 140 amps to a standard car battery.
the best thing to winch with is actually dual batteries, because they have more potential energy than one battery and a big alternator.

very cool. thank you. yeah first step is a yellow top next step bigger alt then dual batteries closer to spring.
