Aisin Hub rebuild fun ;-)

Thanks to all for the excellent tech writeup on Aisin hub rebuilding.

When the info says to be careful when taking the handle off of the hub cover so that you don't lose the spring and ball, THEY AREN'T KIDDING!!

Make sure that you have a nice clean workspace and that you have a backstop to keep the ball in the area when the spring ejects it. Otherwise you too can spend several hours carefully sweeping up your shop and picking through the bits you sweep up. Don't give up. You will find it, eventually.

I found it outside the garage, on the driveway. This after several hours of cleanup and bad words. The garage door was closed. There are two places at each end of the door seal, about 1 1/2 inches wide, that the ball could have rolled out. Could someone tell me how a tiny steel ball can manage to miss the 17' 9" of garage door seal and escape through one of the 1 1/2" gaps? Was Murphy involved?

When the garage door lifted up, the steel ball was right there with the sun glinting off of it. I was happy to find it.

The shop is nice and clean, now. The hubs aren't done yet. I ran out of time looking for the ball.

Don't let this happen to you.

you need to be more careful with your balls. Thanks for the warning I will be sure to not let my balls fly across the shop.

i took the warnings to heart the other day when i did mine. i wasn't entirely certain where the ball would be (now i know... look at the detent, duh) and luckily was ready for it to eject. i trapped it with a shop towel. the other one was so full of gunk that it didn't eject at all.

mine have been in there so long, that the spring was pretty much permanantly compressed and nothing came flying apart

I was thinking about this when I was looking for the ball.

All the ball and spring do is hold the handle in the "lock" or "unlock" position. It didn't look like it would be a problem if I couldn't find it.
I am happy to hear that is wouldn't have been.

Thanks for the info.
