Aisin Clutch - Flat Side Flywheel

I've read the post about the flat side going toward the flywheel and saw the drawn picture in the manual, BUT being paranoid for my first clutch install tomorrow morning so I can finally get my rebuilt engine back in it's home could you guys tell me if I'm right or wrong.

I have a 92' 4x4 22RE, ordered and received a while back the Aisin CKT-049 kit from WabFab. Rockauto says I would use a Aisin CKT-022, they've been wrong before or don't show all my options, so I'm installing what Wabfab sent me he/they know better.

Anyhow....here's the photos.

Side view - I'm assuming the flat side is where just the spline (that's what I'm calling it...) is sticking out

Again...the Spline sticking out and springs more flush, so this is the flat side that goes toward the flywheel, correct?

The bulkier side with springs stick out more but spline covered more, goes toward the transmission side, correct?

Correct. Springs on the transmission side. I know my Marlin Crawler kit (Seco clutch disc I believe) had a paper telling me this.

Bingo, springs out.

My NAPA clutch actually has Flywheel stamped on one side in the metal.
Surprised their not all like that?

Well, bad news....the clutch kit didn't fit. The plate diameter is too big. Funny, the box says 92-95 4cyl, but doesn't fit my 92.

The flywheel is stock oem (Taiho I think at the emblem I see on it), plus if the flywheel was any bigger it wouldn't work anyhow, so must be the wrong kit.

I'll have to call :wabbit2: tomorrow and send an email out. This really sucks and ruined a good day of progress.

I just checked the Aisin website and it says my clutch kit for a 92' DLX is CKT-022, actually it doesn't matter whether you have dlx or not there's only one kit for the 92' 2.4L, guess Rockauto was correct. http://www.aisinaftermarket.com/English/Catalog.php

The 2.4L 1993 DLX uses the CKT-049 and the 1993 non-dlx uses the CKT-022, like mine.

Here's some pictures to show the difference for anyone in the future.

The bearing, I didn't think much of it at the time, but maybe that should have triggered me to do a little research. The old is on the right and new one from the kit on the left.

Nachi bearing from kit with box...

My Flywheel, I thought it was a Taiho logo, but maybe not. Notice the 3 triangles on the upper left? those are the same markings on my main crank caps to show which way points toward the front. What do those triangles mean on the flywheel? that side points up??

Other markings...

Comparison of the old on left, to the new on the left...notice the diameter difference

The new cover on top of the flywheel. I have one pin lined up and in the hole at the top, but you can see how much larger it is than the flywheel while trying to line up the rest of the holes.

The packaging....it was sent from trail-gear but I ordered from Wabfab during the free shipping deal. They probably just got over whelmed with orders and used them as a cooperative substitute, good to see the community vendors helping each other out. ALSO, notice the Aisin HQ location form - Torrance, CA! where I grew up and 10 minutes from my place!!!!! I've driven by the corporate office many many many times since it's been there.

That spells Toyota, in Japanese(Katakana script). Proof that it's OEM.

I have seen that marking before. I feel like I should know what it means...but it's not coming to me at the moment.

Definitely not used as an indicator of install direction. That I've ever seen anyways.

That release bearing and pressure plate look identical to the ones for my V6... just sayin'. Busy worker bees in the shipping department may have grabbed the wrong box for ya.

Greg,

I've had several issues with clutches lately so I called TG and spoke to my rep Monday morning and as a result you'll notice they took clutches off their website until they sort out the mess.

Unfortunately all their main players are now at KOH this week, so not much other than parts shipping is happening.

I apologize your truck is just sitting there but I will make it up to you when we get a proper solution resolved.

Thanks for your patience.

Ok, thanks for letting me know and keeping me informed. If I can find the kit locally I'll pick it up so I can keep going on this project this weekend. And then just hold onto the one after this is sorted out since I'll eventually need to change the clutch again in the future.

OR, if you give credit I could put it toward a new low profile dom tubing bumper

I was able to get the CKT-022 so I could keep moving on this project, what a relief to finally get the engine back in. Took a few hours for me and a buddy, but figuring out we needed to loosen up the tranny mount to get some play it went right in. We also loosed up the motor mounts to get some play also.

Some pictures

The new kit

The CKT-022 came with a Koyo throwout bearing, the same as my old one and looked identical to it. Luckily the pilot bearing was the same Nachi one so I didn't need to go through that hassle of removing that part again (used the wet newspaper trick from this board).

Old post I know, but I will resurrect. I ordered a ckt-049 for my '92 recently, and just dropped the trans last night. Did you only have an issue with the pressure plate being the wrong diameter? I'm hoping that I don't have to send the kit back through the mail, and wait on a replacement....was kind of hoping to have the truck back together before the weekend.

Amended: Just had my wife go and check the clutch disc sizes, and they're different. What a pain in the butt. 2 clutch kits in the same model year...lame. Looks like I'll be waiting to put it back together.

I realize this is a very old Post but when I was looking on the net before I put my clutch kit in; (my motor is also a1992) I had a very hard time getting info on that year. I happen to have been reading reviews off Amazon and stumbled across a fellew's review that said they changed to a bigger clutch after August 08/1992 that year. I'm lucky I saw that review or I may have ordered the wrong one. Want to post it for those searching for answers. The pre Augest clutch is a 224 mm disk and the new one is just slightly bigger with a 239mm disk.
sorry didn't realize this was mentioned in the above post oops sorry I don't know how to deleat my stupidity.
