So my brother-in-law came over today and we finally figured out our fuel line scenario with the help of clear tubing. We put in a new fuel filter and after several attempts couldn't get fuel enough fuel from the tank to the pump. We singled out a short section that may have a blockage so we bypassed it with the clear tube so we could watch the flow. We are getting fuel through it, but also alot of air bubbles. What would cause this? Also, after we had it running for a bit the temp gauge was normal (right in the middle) and we had alot of steam coming from right underneath the exhaust manifold. Checked on the ground and no puddles, checked oil, looked fine. Any ideas?

There is a metal tube that runs behind the exhaust manifold that one of the heater hoses conects to, it could have a pin hole leak in it and water is spraying on the exhaust manifold causing the steam. If thats not it then it could be a cracked head or head gasket.

Tomorrow I'm going to pull the exhaust off and check that tube. I'm starting to get a flashback of having that taken apart at one time when the motor was out so I'll double check that and the heater hose. Thanks. Any thoughts on the fuel situation?

Damn I just posted something similar....I might be getting air in my fuel line too, but I haven't done the clear hose trick yet (clever, by the way).

I would replace all your fuel line hose clamps as a matter of course. It is possible for a pump to suck air through a connection that doesn't leak fluid.

For your fuel problem i would check all of the rubber fuel lines comming from the gas tank to the carb, if they are the original hoses they can crack from age and possibly allow air into the fuel lines.

Well got under there a little so far and for the fuel problem, I'm getting air bubbles in the filter so thats telling me that the hose from the tank to the filter has an air leak?

If you can`t find the problem between the tank and filter, you might have to pull the gas tank and check the fuel pick up inside the tank.
