Aftermarket tint factory 'bronze' tinted windows

I have a 95 4Runner (Green with Oak interior) with factory tinted windows. They appear to be tinted bronze. Has anybody simply had aftermarket tint applied over the factory tinted windows with good looking results? I'm in Oklahoma so I believe I can have windows tinted to 75% dark all around.

I've done several searches where this has come up but no results were ever posted-just questions.

I'm not an expert, but I've never heard of it. It seems to me like this would not be advisable as tint comes in films and you'd simply be putting one film over the other. I'd personally take it to a professional shop and get their opinion.

I'm fairly certain the factory tint is 'in' the glass rather than being a film applied to the glass (if that was the case I'd be able to remove the factory tint).

The 'bronze' tinted rear side windows on my 92 appear to have the tint 'in' them. Adding film will just make it that much darker on the rear side glasses. I've seen tint added to all the glass surfaces of a 2nd gen. It's noticeable but not unsightly, having the rear side glass a little darker than the rest.

Are you trying to get rid of the "bronze" look in the windows or just darken it up? The tint is in the glass so short of changing all the windows out I do not think you will be able to completely get rid of the bronze look.

Someone in my area did a 50% on his bronze windows and it looks a bit funky. Depending how the light hits it they still look bronze on the outside but not inside. At night they look dark tinted but eerie under lights.

I don't mind a different 'level' of tint due to factory tinting. I'm not trying to get rid of the bronze look-just wanting to darken my windows. The only reason I'm hesitant is wondering how the aftermarket dark black tint will mix with the OEM bronze tint. Perhaps I should just buy a bit of tint and try it on a window...

I think I can answer this for you. I put on some some tint on those windows, then wanted it a little darker. The tint guy said no problem and removed the tint to go up one more shade. When he removed the glue with a razor blade, it actually scratched up the factory tint. It looked like total crap, like a bunch of streaks. To make a long story short I made him replace the glass with some used pieces, then tinted those to a limo shade. It looks good but you'll still have the mirror look to it.https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f2/3rd-gen-wheels-2nd-gen-4runner-80407/ If you look at the pics the back windows and rear window match in darkness pretty much.

I did it on mine. No problems. The factory tint still looks mirrored from the outside only now its really hard to see in since I layered on some 20%.

i am surprised no one has corrected you, 75% tint would be like nothing, limo is 5% and what comes on the back of vans and suv's is 15%

no one corrected me because i said 75% dark-not 75% tinted. oem on the back of vans and suv's is probably 25% tinted or allows 75% of the sunlight through the windows...

bike4miles-thanks. checked out your webpage. seems just adding dark tint will be ok I suppose

How would you be able to remove the tint if it were inside the glass?

i like the mirrored look

i'm going with 5% on the side windows and back window

10% or 5% on the driver and passenger side windows probably.

plus a 2.5% tint strip on the top of the windshield.

well backgate..i suggest just getting 5% on the side windows..

i'm getting 5% on the back window because i can roll it down when i need to see out of it at night

you can't do that with yours lol

just sayin it might be better to leave the 20% on the back

haha ya but the different shades of tint looks weird. lol my cousins truck has 5% all around and its ok to see out of at night. he has to slide the back window back some times but he has a single cab super duty so its easier for him haha

I think I can help you. I have the exact truck and I had just the front windows tinted bronze. I used 75% in the front and left the other windows stock. We put another 75% on the back windows and it looked good but too dark for me. My local tint guy did not use automotive tint, he used commercial tint they use for buildings. I put the smoke on and it did not match the other windows. I do not have any pictures but I could get some.
