Advice on a new motor for 90 4runner

I have a four cylinder turbo diesel in my 90 4runner and am wanting to do a swap to a good v6 or even an 8. Does anybody know the best engines to use in a swap like this and other than ebay where I can start shopping for one at.

Any help is appreciated thank you guys

You do know people would kill you to get that turbo diesel!!!

Why would you get rid of it ??

Unless there is a hole in the block from a broken connecting rod.

just how much experience do you have doing the type of work involved in a engine swap.

we have a huge swap section that just begs to be read by future swappers .

Do you want to stay within the Toyota Family or look else where??

Your best bet once you decide on a engine is to buy the complete donor vehicle that way most all the parts are there.

best to always buy a engine you can hear run.

What kind of real world numbers are in the budget??

wyoming is right..most would want that turbo deisel...but whatever floats your boat..

everyone has an opinion on what engine is the best. a lot of it depends on the size of your wallet, your skillset and what sort of deals you can get...

Honestly, its not putting out the power I want or need. It has the torque just not the power needed to push my truck. It gets to the point that it even begins to overheat during the summer when I am not pushing it hard or far distances. Any advice on that? I have swapped the radiator and still have the same issue. I love 4runners and this is my third one, I swear by Toyotas. I have never done an engine swap myself so I have little to no experience doing a job like this. Again I am just seeing what kind of options I have.

Again thanks for the help guys

There's specialty diesel shops that may be able to soup up that engine. There was one in San Diego that took those crappy 80's olds diesels and made them do tire burnouts, until the blocks or heads cracked which was a problem with them.

Just what are you comparing it with??

just what are you looking for in terms of power??

The overheating could be your driving style hard to call from far away.

If you really don`t like this a swap is going to be a real pain for you.

sell this buy what you want??

Im not worried about the power as I am the overheating. My driving style is nothing out of the ordinary, im not romping this thing through dunes, just trying to see if anybody has any ideas on why its having these issues.

When you say swapped radiator is it with a Brand New one??

Have you installed a manual temperature Gauge ??

If you lug the engine it can over heat. What kind of rpm does this over heating happen?? Diesels like to operate in a pretty narrow power band lugging the engine will over heat it in a heart beat.

Never having driven one of these I can`t say for sure.

Do you have a Pyrometer??

Is it a Auto or manual??

I am curious just where you are??

Im located in Kansas, so safe to say that during the winter I have no issues with overheating but that's due to the freezing temperatures here. It doesn't overheat at a specific RPM it just tends to start after about 30-45 minutes of driving. In town driving I don't have issues with but if im out heading to the lake or river and going up and down hills it is a guarantee that it will happen. Also I have no Pyrometer on this rig, I put a brand new radiator in it myself, it is an automatic and I have not installed a manual temperature gauge.

Thank you so far for taking an interest in trouble shooting this with me.

Does this have AC could the condenser be so blocked with dirt even the new radiator is not getting a good flow of air??

I see there was AC but the lines are gone was the condenser removed??

Strange because most cooling problems would occur in stop and go city type driving

When driving on the highway getting a good flow of air through the radiator most keep cool

Just how did you spec the new radiator for this engine??

I really wonder if it is a sending unit electrical problem .Because this is backwards of most other over heating issues.

I wish I was closer

Just how did you get lucky enough to get this vehicle ??

Was the old coolant ever very rusty looking? It could have sediment/rust clogging the engine block and/or head.

I try to do a radiator flush every six months or so and it comes out a bit brown but nothing too dark.

I do not have A/C in this rig, I just rock the windows down and enjoy the breeze. The overheating is mainly caused when going up and down hills. It will occur while doing city driving just takes a bit of that constant stop and go. On the highway its typically good. Im typically going only about 50-55 mph but im cruising, its when I start going uphill that my gauge starts going into the red, once I make my way down though the gauge goes right back down. I have owned 4runners for years, the last one I had was a 89 that I built from the ground up. I saw this one with all the suspension work and motor swap that I wanted to do to my 89 so I bought it right away. Now im just trying to work out the kinks.

Ok, so I did some research on the motor and talked with a guy that did some work on the same motor that I have, however I have lost contact with him and am now searching for some new advice. So the motor would overheat when driving for a short period of time, the advice given to me was to replace the head, that was supposed to be aluminum with a steal head, however when I pulled the head out it happened to be steal. As I said previously I have replaced the radiator and the water pump seems to be working just fine so if anybody has any advice on what maybe the next step is that would be great. Thanks for any advice Gents.
