ADD to Manual hub swap: issues after swap

I did the swap on a 90 4runner and now im having problems. i put it in 4wd the other day to back my trailer up my driveway(its steep), locked the hubs, put it in 4low and started backing up and it felt like i was dragging my front axle and it wasnt sounding very good. so i stopped and checked it out and unlocked the left hub and tried to spin the cv but couldnt(it was real tough) until i unlocked both hubs, then when i spin one cv both cv spun. then i couldnt get it out of 4low( the shifter would go into 2wd but it was rough and the 4wd light wouldnt go off). Finalyy got it out of 4wd and got the light off.
Now i dont remember if i should be able spin the left or right cv when i lock the opposite hub, Anyone done the swap that can check for me? also any ideas would help. thanks

I've done it and i've never had this issue... I'd double check that you did it correctly. mine operates perfectly. my CV joints pop but thats because they need replacing. maybe yours are doing the same.

i dont think it was a problem that i did, because i did it like 2 months ago and never problem till now, but maybe. can you lock your left hub and spin your right cv freely?

I think I know what you're talking about...
which CV joint is spinning? Driver side or passenger side?
I have my passenger side set to LOCKED but my driver side is set to FREE. Why? because my driver side makes a rubber boot binding noise... a faint clicking noise but when its set to free, it doesn't. This is a sign of needing my CV joints to be replaced. it operates and functions correct when in 4WD but instead of spinning both of the knobs, I only have to spin the passenger side to free and then Im in 4 wheel drive. It'll be like this until I replace my CV joints...

does that make sense? is this the issue you're having? It's because your ADD vacuum hoses are still hooked up so i've been told.

Sounds like maybe you have a 4wd problem not a hub problem. Were you still backed up into your driveway with the trailer on while trying to get it out of 4wd??? If you have a load on the front diff it won't like it. When my Runner was still IFS once in a while I'd have to back up 3 or 4 ft to get it to click out.

Also just so you know you don't need to lock your hubs to put your transfer case in 4-low. In fact pavement and 4 low is a really bad idea. It you just want the lower gearing just shift your transfer case in 4low. The driveline will spin the diff but your not transfering any power to the front the wheels so it won't bind up on you when you try to turn.

I use "2 low" all the time.

It thought that with the ADD -> Manual Hubs conversion, all you needed to do was replace the hubs and away you go?!?!

You need to install the hubs in the Free Postion. You have installed the hubs in the locked postion so they will not unlock.

no i installed them unlcoked, and ive had them on for a couple of months. They worked fine until the other day. i used them once before.

Im trying to figure it out one problem at a time. to eliminate the hub and cv problem I was wondering if someone who has done the conversion and locked the actuator fork would do this for me.

Lock your left hub, and spin your left cv axle.
does both cv's spin when you spin the left one, or just the one you spin spins?

thanks
