ADD IFS swap 1987 pickup.

Ok, I swear I searched. Here, Google, all the links, gurus and Haynes. The procedures make sense. I just am not sure which ones, the order or what I have to do for sure, I read needles..tube swap... ADD disconnect.. and I'm not sure. Admittedly that may just be a function of my hard head....but its hurts from looking for so long.

So if I missed it then flame away, but my question is this: I currently have an 87 IFS 22RE pickup with Aisin manual hubs with stock 4.10 diff. I bought front and rear V6 4.56 diffs. The front has ADD. So what steps (don't need the details) do I need to take to swap that in. Thanks in advance.

Take out old diff, swap driver side axle tubes (optional, if you dont swap them, you must lock the shift fork in place, also easy.) and put it back in.

Sound easy right? The first IFS diff swap I didtook almost 8 hours. Haha.

Thanks guys. So if I lock the fork or swap the tubes I can still just drive around in 2wd, and turn the hubs shift into 4wd and I'm good to go? IE: it works the same as it does before the swap.

And Rattlewagon. I feel your pain....I swapped the 350 on my 90 jimmy ended up taking a month once I got in there! Work gets in the way too....

Hey I'm in the same boat here.... I bought a non-ADD 5.29 front diff but it did not come with the side gear shafts. I'm looking to buy a non-ADD driver side (the long one) gear shaft. It is my understanding that my ADD one will not work, however I also believe that my short side one will swap over. Can any one attest to this? Does anyone want to help a brother out an make a few $?

Your short side will swap over. For the long side just take the one off your current diff and put it on the new one to keep your ADD

If you get a non add shaft, you should also get manual hubs (if you dont already)

I've had manual hubs for a loooong time so ditching ADD is the way to go in my case. wound up sourcing some shafts last night locally out of some guy's SAS pile. I think I'm paying to much but for a busy student having him pull and cleans the shafts was well worth the non-headache. Finally I have all my parts minus the seals and c-clips.

man, you make it sound so easy. I got the ADD tube out and the tube from from my manual 410. they look nothing alike, the shaft wont go in!

I just swapped the whole diff so i didn't have to deal with that. I think you're going to need to swap the long side tube as well as the shafts.

hey dude, i never notice you on here. I lived in chico for 6 years. Worked at Riebes auto parts for three. Moved in july to NM.

By the long tube you mean the driver's side correct? I removed that from the v6 ADD diff, but there is a spline gear like in the hubs on the ADD diff. do I have to swap those out?
