add a/c to a 3.0?

Heres the deal, i got an 88 pickup, runs fine, heat works, but has no A/C. no a/c button or compressor. is it possible to add that from another 3.0 that had factory a/c? or do i need a new engine or truck?

i dont wanna get rid of it due to the fact i bought it for 600 bucks and has factory power locks and windows and sunroof.

You should be able to as most AC where added in North America.

Read somewhere that electrical connectors where an issue but not sure.

Should have down the same to mine.

Check this out for new or you could get the parts from a wrecker.

I did it on my '91. Ordered all of the bits I needed from TAP Recycling in 2001. Most of the wiring was already in the vehicle but you need to have a complete detailed list of the parts required before you start ordering, otherwise you will probably not get everything you need. Also, some of the parts are fragile (aluminum tubing, AC rad etc.) so you need to find a source that will take care in the stripping and shipping.

The job is not terribly difficult, just needs time and patience. If you decide to go ahead I can help with some diagrams if you don't have them already.

Cheers!

Also expect to buy a new or reman compressor, trying the ones from the yard that are 20+years old ends up being counter productive and lots of recharging.

As Marc said, ackits.com is a good source for bolt-on a/c systems.

You might save money sourcing parts from the wreckers but will the wreckers give you the same warrantee?

Yes, it's a very good idea to be clear up front with the dismantler that you won't be satisfied until they have shipped all the parts you require for the AC and they have been received in working order, at the price you negotiate with them.

The first shipment I received from TAP was not all good (obvious damage, either from the yard or during shipping due to poor packing) so I just sent them a list of what was bad/missing and they sent replacements that were in good shape.

I don't think TAP is around any more but I'm sure there are other big Japanese car dismantlers out there.

Good luck,

Jim
