hello, i have a 87 toyota 4x4 (22r) and the clutch on my compressor is sticking/screeching terribly even when the ac is commanded off, the truck still has the original r-12 charge and will freeze you out of the truck with the ac on.
i just want to replace the clutch and coil but i cant seem to find one,toyota says its no longer available and all the parts stores around here want to sell me a compressor i would rather not convert it if possible

Find a used clutch someone should have one.

lots of 4runners from that year.

I don`t know it might be possible just to rebuild yours the bearings should be easy to find. I don`t know how hard to get out .

If the coil still pulls it in why mess with it .

I know if it is apart why not replace the coil.

Bearings for the AC clutch are available and are replaceable. You can get the bearings from the dealer, part 90099-10133 it will run you about $17.00 to $23.00 just for the OEM bearing. You can get it from other places epay, partsgeek, etc... cheaper. If the magnetic clutch coil is still working, I would just leave it, those things are expensive or hard to find. If you don't want to go through the trouble, you can try and find a used one. If that compressor is the 10p15c (most common for the year) it is also common for a bunch of other cars foreign and domestic.

the bearings are fine, i can literially pull out on the clutch while its running (ac switch off) and get the noise to stop, i just cant seem to find a aftermarket clutch only, this is a v belt style compressor.

I will give you a little tip. If you remove the nut on the front of the clutch you can shim out the front disk to get rid of the noise. The spring or rubber insert that pulls the disk away is starting to fail. I have cut soda or beer cans to do this in the past and it does work. You cut the shims to fit the hub of the disk that fit the compressor shaft. Watch out for the woodruff key that is on the compressor shaft it's pretty small.

The shims will go between the disks hub and the compressor shaft.

When I converted mine I went through 5 compressors from the yard, all of the clutches were screeching as yours is, ended up getting a reman due to I toyota didn't have a clutch kit anymore
