95 runner not starting

was smoking really bad. I cut the engine let it cool and put the hose back on I trie to start it and it would not idle it would just die. If I give it gas it reves fine. The oil isn't milky no smoke that was coming out of the tail pipe. Got very hot check engine light came on. I plus it over let it cool I added water and tried to start it up. But it would just crank. If I gave it a little gas it ran fine but died almost instantly after I let off the gas I only did it for a few seconds I didn't want to do more damage so I stopped and had it towed home. Anyone that can help its my first runner. Please? It is smoking from back of engine and it has a loud click some times. I went to pull in in my garage and It was running ok i hopped out and when I got back in I put it in reverse and then went into drive gave it gas and died. I was able to get it into my garage and don't know what to do, is it my egr or something worse? There is no water in my oil and no oil in my water, no white smoke out exhaust and the engine isn't sweating please help

First off, have you read what code the CEL is generating?

Can you be specific where it is smoking from? At the back of the 3.0 there is a U shaped coolant hose that is known to fail.
When you say you let it cool....why...was the temp gauge in the hot zone?
Are you using coolant? Have you checked intake tube and all vacuum hoses for cracks and leaks?
What is the maintenance history?

Stating of I bout the runner 2 years age with a blown engine I but a new one in a little over a year ago. No problems, then I was going to school a heater hose poped of( I don't know how it did) I put a new clamp on the hose it was the uper heater hose. And added coolant the smoke Is coming from the back of the engine I can't find were, it is getting hot to. It's got a little oil leak but I keep the right amount of oil in it and I cange the oil and everything else at there respected times
