94 sr5 3.0 truck wont go faster than 65mph

i have a 1994 Toyota pickup 4x4 sr5 with a 3.0 v6 engine
i just replaced the head gasket. As i put the truck back together i timed the engine iaw the maintenance manual. all the timing marks lined up perfectly. the truck at first seemed to run fine after i put it back together. it was idling a little lower than i was used to around 500-750 before i would idle around 1000 or so, but other than that it seemed to have power and everything till i tried to get to freeway speeds. in fourth gear i was pushing a little and was going 65 and around 4000 rpms give or take, then i shifted into 5th gear and the rpms dropped to around 3000 but it would go faster than 65 mph. as i continued to push the pedal farther down nothing would happen the rpm wouldn't increase nor would the mph. i am at a loss i really don't even know what to check but any help would be greatly appreciated.

Something is limiting your power. Some things to check...
1) Make sure your accelerator pedal is opening the throttle all the way. There is a rubber sleeve over the cable next to the pedal connection that can split and significantly reduce your throttle range.
2) Retarded ignition timing can cause poor performance at high loads.
3) Do a compression check and make sure everything is up to snuff in that regard.

rjr nailed it, I'd double check your timing.

Sounds like it was idling high before and that its back to normal now. maybe you had a vaccum leak that you sealed up when changing the head gasket. the 3.0s are known for a high idle problem.
