'94 Pickup Idle Speed
I am SEVERLY confused on how to test the idle speed. I bought an Actron CP7677 Multimeter/Tachometer to test the idle speed, but so far, I've had absolutely NO luck. Where do I hook the test probes to? I have the factory manuals for the truck, but even that is very confusing. PLEASE HELP ME!

Idle speed
On the passenger side inner fender there is a fuse box. Just to the motor side of that box is another small box, maybe 1" x 1 1/2". Open the small box and there are a bunch of electrical connections. On the lid is a description of what connector is for what. Put your probe into the one labeled IG- and the other probe of your multimeter to any ground. This will give you a proper reading of your engine rpm.

Does it matter which test probe I use to plug into which port? Right now, I'm connecting the black probe to a ground a the red to the IG terminal, and I'm still getting nothing.

EDIT: I just looked at the owner's manual for that multimeter and you're doing exactly what it tells you to do with the test leads(Red to ignition coil negative terminal/IG-, Black to ground). So either the tool is not working correctly, or you have the dial on it set wrong.

I guess it's just a lost cause, because no matter what I do, I still can't get a damn rpm reading! This is so frustrating! Thanks for the help though!

On my multimeter that is the correct position of the probes. However, there are several points to plug the red probe into. Does your multimeter have different points to connect the red probe to? Also some multimeters have a different setting for 4,6, and 8 cylinders. Are you set to the correct one? Have you checked your ground point to verify you are getting a good ground? Lots of variables here. Maybe a little more info as to how you are set up>

Dont give up that easy! You are connected to the IG(-) port correct? Red probe connected to correct port on your multimeter? I just looked up your multimeter and it is similar to mine. It works perfectly if all connections are good.

Yes, I have the red connected to the tachometer port, and the black connected to the COM port on the multimeter. I am using my negative battery terminal as the grounding point and then putting the red test probe on the IG port in the diagnostics box. Is this correct? If so, it's still not reading an rpm.

Well, to my amazement and embarassment for that matter, my multimeter was actually on hold the whole time, which why I wasn't able to get any readings :/ Nonetheless, I adjusted my rpm to about 850 for right now. I tried to adjust the timing and my distributor bottoms out before it's able to get to 5 degress BTDC. What would need to be adjusted in order to get the timing set properly from here? Should I just start a whole new topic about this? Anyways, I am more than grateful for everyone's help! In the end though, it was a very embarassing and most aggravating fault on me.

Glad to hear you got it. Did you put the jumper wire in to set the timing? It doesn't work without it. Check out the procedures in the FSM that mud hippy poster further up the page.

This morning, I tried to adjust my ignition timing by jumping the the TE1 and E1 terminal in the diagnostics port, but was still unable to get my ignition to 5 degress BTDC. I don't know if I'm not making good enough contact on the terminal points or if there is another variable preventing me from being able to set it correctly.

What are you using for a jumper? I use a spade terminal cut in half to get a good contact. You may have the same problem I recently had. Check the timing without the jumper, then connect the jumper and check timing. The timing should retard a couple of degrees with the jumper installed. If it doesn't you may have a problem with your TPS. I tried to set my timing several times with no luck until I discov er ed the bad TPS.

Yes, I think it might just be my TPS. I'll have to test it when I get back this weekend. Gonna be a hell of a project for me, since I'm definitely no mechanic, but I'll give it a go, if I feel like it's possible.

Definatly not a difficult project, just need a little patience. Have a new throttle body gasket on hand when you do it. It is nearly impossible to do it with the throttle body on the truck. Four bolts and the throttle body comes off. Then follow the instructions in the FSM or on 4crawlers website. If your tps is bad it will make all the difference in the world getting it fixed. If you have any questions let me know. I just went through this myself.
