Hey Guys,

About 30 days ago I installed a new alternator on my pickup (1994 Base Model 22RE 5 Speed) after the battery and charge lights were illuminated. I thought the problem was solved because I've had about 1500 care free miles.

Then out of the blue today I noticed that my laptop was charging intermittently through the cigarette lighter....went to start my truck and just got a machine gun clicking sound from the starter. So I jump started it. It would run for 5 to 10 seconds then stumble and die. So right now my truck will be spending the night at a local military installation. Argh! Monday lived up to its terrible reputation today.

1. Battery charge engine not running is 11.7 volts

2. Did not pick up any charging at the battery terminals with a multimeter with the engine started.

3. I didn't check the stud on the alternator with the engine running.

Any insights would be greatly appreciated, and I'll be sure to post a follow up when I get the truck repaired.

At any time was the replaced alternator tested ??

If not it is possible your problem was corrected when the alternators were swapped now it is back .

First as you know your battery is discharged .

Is the battery on the way out unable to take a charge any more.

or do you have a charging or wiring issue.

Corroded or broken battery terminals.

Poor ground connections

The wiring from the alternator B terminal is just burnt and brittle no longer able to conduct like it should.

The plugs at the back of the alternator do tend to corrode .

These Ecu`s have a thresh hold voltage once below that they shut down.

See if the battery takes a charge and holds it or have it load tested

Thanks wyoming9. I never knew that about the low voltage and the ecu. Will be picking up a battery on the way into work today.

I'll post a progress report as the repair/fix unfolds today.

Probably just a bad rebuild. You should run a 4ga cable from the alternator to the battery and check the other wires for corrosion and breakdown.

Thanks wyoming9! It turns out that my battery was the problem and wasn't getting a charge and finally went below the minimum voltage for the ecu to keep the motor going.
