94 4runner Won't Ignite...

94 Yota 4runner, SR5, 3.0, Automatic, 190,000 miles

I've tried finding another thread with the same issue, but was having a hard time.

My Yota won't start. It'll crank just fine, but it won't catch. I just installed a new starter, battery, and cables about 3 months ago, and I'm almost certain that it isn't the electrical (unless its a fuse?)

I'm wondering if it is the fuel pump because I ran out of gas just yesterday, and I've heard that it can possible hurt the pump.

Also, after starting and running it for a little while and then turning off and letting it sit... when I would come back to start it (5mins to 4 hours later) it would idle rough until I'd driven it a little bit.

Its sitting at my work right now, and since I only have this one vehicle I will have to fix it at work tomorrow.

Any suggestions? I can drop the tank in the parking lot to put in a new pump if that is the problem.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Also, does anyone have the links to the 4runner manuals? I had them at one point, but now I can't find them.

Thanks,
Steve

You're going to have to see if it's getting spark and fuel. We'll assume it's getting air.

I just got to work, so I'll check it at my 15min and see about fuel and spark.

Thanks

you say it won't start... then say after it starts and you let it sit "5mins to 4 hours later", and start it, it idles rough.
will it start or not?

and if you're really having trouble getting it to ignite, don't put the fuel in the tank...
put it all over the exterior and interior of the truck then toss a lit match into it.

Easy way to check the fuel is to crack open the cold start injector line. you should have pressure there. If not then open your fuel pump access under pass rear seat and test the pump.
If the pump is working and you have fuel and spark then i would recomend the cold start injector time switch or the coolant temp sensor (for efi) This seems to be VERY common.

Thanks for the quote ABE I have wanted do that many times

hey man....ive got some interesting news for you on ur runner

chances are if its cranking over but not igniting....its probably not your battery or starter. those are doing their job.

1. test for spark- do a good old spark test on the block. no spark? check the coil, dist cap and rotor and possibly replace the icu.

2. test for fuel- do what the other guy said.

3. all else fails check the major fuses in the power distribution box under the hood

4. and make sure the dash lights are coming on when you turn the key, if they arent then nothing else is getting power. sometimes the ignition switch will fail but will still allow the starter to be turned on. if the ignition part fails then the fuel pump and everything else connected through that switch will not work. causing the vehicle to not start

I was checking the fuel, and it seems like it is getting to the engine, so I might have been wrong... but I'll have to check the cold start injector time switch, per your suggestion, Bob.
I took the number 5 plug out, cleaned it, and put it on the block. It cranked over and kinda started... a move in the right direction! Does this sound like I need new plugs?

Abe:
Yeah, it will not start... sorry, I was referring to last week when it would start and then waiting a little while it wouldn't idle well. And my wife agrees, she says burn it to the ground

Bob:
I'm a little new to 4runners, is the cold start injector time switch on the thermostat housing? Where is the coolant temp sensor are? Is it the green plug behind the intake, near the firewall? If you have a picture of it, that'd be great!

Machine:
I'll have to check the dash lights... I didn't even think about this before. I hope it's not the ICU.

Both the CSI time switch and the efi CTS are on the sensor bank behind the manifold near the firewall.
the efi CTS is the one second one from the driver side tallest one.
I had the same problem and thats how I found yotatech. Put the cts in and varooom!!!
Good luck keep us updated

If you remove the Cold Start Injector AND keep it connected to the fuel line AND crank the engine over AND fuel sprays out of the injector then that's probably not what is causing the no start.

You may have to have the CSI grounded when testing.

Pour gasoline all over it and throw a match on it, it'll ignite.

Its definitely getting fuel, so I'm not worried about the pump. I'm really leaning towards the cold start injector switch being the problem, but I haven't ruled out the coolant temp sensor.

I found another thread on here that shows how to test it.
