94 4runner 3vz rebuild overheating

Hey guys,

So I rebuilt a 3.slow a couple weeks ago, and once everything went back together it ran great. But my friend says that it gets really warm. and he can here the water boiling in the upper radiator hose. Also if he lets it sit there and idle to warm up. the thermostat seems to never open. the lower hose never gets warm. But again, the upper hose sounds like there is boiling water in it. We did the best we could to make sure there are no air bubbles, and even filled up the engine from the upper radiator hose before filling up the radiator.

What I did to the engine. Replaced head gaskets, heads surfaced, new gaskets that needed to be replaced. Number 1 cyl had a blown the headgasket.

I searched around for overheating causes with this motor, and have confirmed we are not running into issues others has seen. The radiator is almost brand new, and it seemed to be fine before. When putting the headgaskets on, I didn't think you could put them on wrong as others have stated. Because if they go on upside down, then the HG just doesn't look right. it blocks certain passages that I believe should be open.

There is no water in the oil, and no oil in the water. The water isn't being forced into the overflow at all as if there were exhaust going into the coolant system. It just doesn't want to cool itself down

I am going back to his house this weekend, and would like to have some good ideas to try, or look for. Thanks Yotatech!

Try lifting up the front as high as you can and then letting it run while squeezing the lower hose. Top off the coolant until it fills up all the way

he just put a new one in today. The other one wasn't very old though. He is going to pull the thermostat and see if he can tell if water is even circulating. For some reason he thinks it could be the water pump. But I am not sure how the pump couldn't turn if the motor is running. it runs off the timing belt.

Oh yah it cools just fine without thermostat. With the thermostat in that i boiled the lower hose stays cool, and the top boils. I rev the motor up to like 3grand and the temp gauge starts to go down. Air in the system? Impeller problems on the water pump?
