In the v6 chain drive tcases do the chains ever stretch?

I have owned alot of 4banger toy trucks with geared tcases. I picked up a 93 xcab v6/5spd with about 150k on it.I have put 5k miles on it in the last couple of months. I have had this problem since day 1 but it hasnt gotten any worse in the last 5k miles.

With the brake on and I put it in 1st and start to let the clutch out I get a "ping". then throw it in reverse and start to let the clutch out it will "ping". I can get it to do it everytime by switching directions(1st to reverse). Shifting into 4x4 and /or locking hubs dosent change the noise.

Sounds like the typical u joint failure, BUT i have replaced all ujoints with good japanese joints and even swapped dshafts with a known good one on another DD rig with no change what so ever in the sound. No vibrations at all up to 80mph, before and after the ujoint swap. Everyone I have had listen to it swears it is in the tcase, But i know that dshafts can echo noise. I cant get it to do it by hand, only when the slack is taken up when the motor is running. It does sound like it could be a chain with a little bit of play in it allowing the teeth to move just enough.

Any other v6 5spd owners have the same sound? Maybe it is just how chain tcases sound after 150k?

It did have ADD, till i converted to stock aisin locking hubs(noise was there before i did the conversion). So it is possible that the previous owners ran it in 4wd on the street with the hubs lock in.

Im not too much help, but if the po ran 4wd on the street (dry) the t-case wouldve probibly blown up.

Possibly, and even likely on a gear driven tcase but a chain might stretch rather than break. I have seen gear driven tcases on early toys bind up on the street to the point that they were unable to be driven and they didnt actually break. I live in snow country and lots of newbie drivers dont realize that when the roads dry up the need to shift back to 2wd. They usually stop by my house to see if I know what is wrong with it since there are so many early toy trucks sitting in front.


Or the sound is completely normal for a chain driven tcase with 150k on it? Since it seems that there are a few 3.0 owners on the board I was hoping that one of them might have noticed that their rig makes the same noise.

Have you checked the fluid level in the t-case? And, I'm not sure offhand if your t-case runs gear oil or ATF....I'd have to look it up....but, make sure it has the right fluid. I have read where guys have opened the plug and found the wrong stuff.

when you pulled your d-shaft did you check for excessive pinion play? on the rear end and t-case.

sorry I should of added all that in the first post.

Both Tcase and Trans fluid were changed to Redline gear oil with no change in noise. Old fluid was clean and no metal chunks.

Fluid was changed in rear end to redline shock proof, no metal particles in old fluid. no change in noise

Rear end is tight with no leaks(first sign of bad pinion preload=crush sleeve). I have rebuilt a few toy thirds and this one feels fine. Every bad third I have gone through always howled at speed(pinion bearing or gears) or would groan around corners(carrier bearings), this one is nice and quiet.

Both flanges were tight with no runout and acceptable amounts of rotational movement.

I have the toy manual for the truck.

FOr background I am not a toy newbie as I have built many SASed toy rockcrawlers and all the simple stuff has been covered. I do all my own wrenching and welding. I have built a few dual case setups, rebuilt both trans and 4cyl tcases, built various thirds(ARB, Detroit, Lockwrongs, and regeared), rebuilt 22r and 22re motors, dozens of clutch jobs and I usually build my own driveshafts at home, but this shaft is the stocker.

I just dont really want to tear into the tcase on it since it is my current DD and my other toyota is on big bias iroks so it hates the freeway.

maybe i should just get the adapter from marlin and bolt up one of my spare 4cyl tcases to it?

I was really hoping to hear that it is a normal noise for chain driven tcases with a lot of miles on them.

then i would say your t-case is getting bad! but if you can handle the noise and there is no vibs why dont you just run it!

Where are you located? I have a perfectly working V-6 T-case out of my 94 that I yarded when I did my dual case install.

its the slip yoke on the driveshaft see a junkyard or a driveline shop

I think I might have the same problem as you. When i take off in 1st gear with the windows down you can hear a light "ping". It doesnt affect anything (no jerks/cluncks). It actually sounds more like someone hit a bell lightly and it's like a chime/ping noise. Mine has done that for the last year (when i bought it) from 192K-207K. Used the 4x4 this past winter with no problems. It's a yota so im gonna keep on driving it! Let me know if you find out what the problem is!
