im having trouble with my truck starting....these are the symptoms

1. ill first clarify that it has ALWAYS started. mabey not on the first key turn... but eventually it did
2. it cranks perfect if its been setting overnight and it also may set for 3-4 days and will still start perfectly.
3. after a 10hr shift at work it will not crank on the first try, mabey not even the second try
4. if it sets for 20 mins or so, it is hard to start
5. if i shut it off and immediatly try to crank it, it cranks fine.

i thought that it was having trouble holding fuel pressure after the truck was off. even took it to the toyota place and they diagnosed it as that and told me it need a new fuel pump and pressure regulator. after they quoted 1200 bucks to replace the two off them. i replaced them myself. replacing them did not change any of my symptoms. exact same thing as before.

pleas help, i would leave it to a mechanic to sort out but i just dont have the time to leave my truck with anyone, and after felling like the toyota place was trying to screw me, i would like to figure this out on my own with your help.

when u cranking it does it smell like it is getting too much fuel? might be the cold injector dumping gas when cold. just my thought,

two options.

Either your injector/injectors are leaking down or your fuel pump is not holding prime.

IF the injectors leak down you usually have a strong odor of fuel when it fires up.

If you want to speed up your cranking for now, cycle your ignition twice (off to on,, back to off back to on) then hit the starter, it will fire right up.

if the fuel pump wasn't holden prime then why would it crank fine after it has set for days?? thats what i thought the origional problem was, but a put a new fuel pump in it

I "feel" like it does have a fuel odor, ill have to pay more attention to it. some times when it does crank it stumbles really bad for just a few seconds like its flooded or short of fuel, not sure which one. that leans twards the injectors or the cold start a little more

Hook a fuel pressure gauge to the system. Drive it, park it and note the fuel pressure. Give it time and see how far it drops. I personally do not know what the spec for fuel drop is, but its usually only a few pounds. The FSM links are available on this site. Make sure its loosing fuel presssure before you dig into the system.

when you try starting when its not wanting to start do u press the pedal at all or just turn it over, if u do not press the pedal down and see if that makes a difference. and allows it to start.

what will i cost for me to buy the stuff to hook up the fuel pressure gauge?? i have a lot of tools, but nothing to do that with

Fuel pressure gauge should run around 30-40 for an average joe type deal. 60+ on a good one. If you buy one that comes with all the adapters your going to spend 150-250.

However I have used maybe one adapter out of my kit as most cars have a 1/4"fitting on the fuel rail or on the pressure line. I do not think your yota has one which means you might have to work up an adapater.

I have been searching for an answer to this issue for along time. My truck starts fine cold or hot. It is just the warm starts that it will crank and crank until i let off the key, then crank it again, and it fires right up. I have done a complete tune up except the O2 sensor, checked the fuel pressure according to the FSM and it checks out fine. Set the timing. Tested the cold start injector, tested the Coolant Temp sensor. All with no luck.
When is the last time you replaced the O2 Sensor? That is about the only thing i have left to try or maybe replace the coil. I'll be very interested to find out what is causing your issue.
