93 V6 Auto 4X4 A/C Compressor Replacement

Newby..Looked everywhere for a write-up on AC compressor replacement. Any help would be appreciated. Compressor housing leaking and looking to replace. Saw some on line ranging from $170-$300+. Why the huge diff in $$? Saw a Denso for $273. Is this a PITA project?

You might end up replacing seals throughout if it's been out for while, and it is sort of a PITA.

Best place I've found for Denso replacement (only way I'd go) is www.sparkplugs.com

Well I got a guy that swears he can do the compressor, and he owes me. FSM says to drop the P/S pump in preparation. Saw that on a timing belt thread and even that looked like a PITA. Oh well...no guts, no glory. Gotta have air in the "dry" heat of AZ. Will post anything that might help the next poor SOB.

Curious to know how you're doing on this project. I'm in the same boat--need to replace the compressor on my 93 V6 3vze auto.

Just so happens I need to swap out my leaky PS pump, too . . .

Happy to help if you're nearby! (It would sure help me . . . )

jtravis...I'm in AZ. I am scratching up the $300+ to get the parts. I will try to document what we do and pass it on. Probably good idea to knock out the P/S pump while your doing yours. I'm all about fixing stuff if its in the tear-down of another component. Gonna do my timing belt and replace the W/P while I'm in there even though its working fine.

'93 V6 A/T 4WD Runner Code 25

Put what I suspect was crappy fuel and now have engine that feels like it's running on 4-5 cylinders. Got a Code 25. Will check for vacuum leaks. I see members refer to "SeaFoaming" vacuum system. Bought a can and would like to try this. Can someone point out exactly where I introduce the Seafoam and is it done w/ engine running @ a certain RPM, etc..

I am in the middle of replacing the head gaskets when I noticed that the belt for the a/c wasn't even on. Figured it must has been a problem before so PO just cut belt to save $$.

Red face

two year old thread.

If you don`t have the tools and know how it can be a real pain.

Most compressor swaps for a warranty need to be signed off by a licensed AC tech last I looked.

It sucks to spend the money for a new compressor and dryer only to have your evap coil look like it was shot with bird shot
