I'd start by looking for vacuum leaks. If you know of a mechanic nearby, have a few dollars, and want to save yourself some headache, see if he/she has a smoke machine. Those things are fantastic and can locate any leaks within a matter of minutes. Just call around. It's worth it. My friend/mechanic only charged me $10 after I rebuilt my 22re and found the leak at those cold start injector. I sprayed all around that bugger, too.

vacuum lines are a good place to check and intake gaskets.
lotta 20+ year old cars have issues like that.
had the exact same issue on an '80 p/u with 22r and nissan 720. but those were carbuerated engines. just a suggestion.

well im changing the head gasket this weekend so the intake gasket will be replaced the vacuum lines are all there and hooked up and it doesnt do it all the time just most of the time it did it all day today and i noticed the volt guage was all over the place so im thinking maybe the alternator is going out and putting to much load on the engine at idle so i get home and go to check it and it runs fine so any help would be great

Do you mean the volt guage also straightened out when you got it home?

Check all the ground wires, then. And, check your connections at the alternator. Sounds like a bad/intermittent connections somewhere.

Check the coolant level and possibly thermostat. This is exactly what happened to me when I replaced the thermostat. I played with the idle screw, drained and replaced the coolant again and made sure the thermostat was opening. (it wasn't) Sounds a lot like a vacuum leak though or leaky head gasket. could be as simple as a bad connection to the alternator. Start with the small things and work your way up.
