93 Pickup Clutch Problem

I had my 93 3vze 4x4 motor rebuilt about 2 months ago. Spun a bearing in the crankshaft. Shop that did the work said the clutch line was leaking and replaced it. Drove for about 3 weeks and the clutch pedal began to stick about 1/3 of the way down. Then it just dumped on me in the middle of traffic. The shop said it wasn't their problem, so no warranty.

Took it to a different shop and they said that the lower fitting was loose on the hose and all the fluid had leaked out. Picked it back up yesterday and it still had the 1/3 of the way pedal stick problem, but made it home ok. Go out to go to work this morning and now there's no engagement again, like when it failed in traffic. Gears grind real hard trying to get it in reverse. The new shop had replaced the fluid and tighten the fitting, checked the master and slave and said they weren't leaking either, so those can't be the problem, but still no fix. I can start it in reverse without it rolling but as soon as I slightly let off the clutch, it will roll and can't get it out of reverse.

Also checked the mounting bracket and it's not cracked. Anybody got anything else?

Your story is hard to follow. Are you losing fluid? The master and slave are pretty much it in a clutch system other than the pedal and lines.

First shop did rebuild and replaced a leaking clutch line. Never had a clutch problem until they got a hold of it.

The second shop who's looking at the clutch problem said the original shop didn't install the new clutch line properly, so all the fluid leaked out. He tighten the fitting and refilled the clutch fluid yesterday. Still has same problem as when I took it to him last week. The pedal only return about 1/3 of the way. Don't know if all the fluid leaked out overnight.

Check fluid. If low, find the leak.

If your fluid level is fine then more than likely the slave or master are no good.

Have you ever bleed it?

So when your saying the pedal returns only 1/3 of the way. You mean the clutch pedal is staying toward the floor? Any resistance in the pedal? New clutch disc and all when the motor was rebuilt?

The behaviors you described are the exact symptoms of low/non-existent fluid, and/or air in the system. My guess is the 2nd shop fixed the line and refilled it, but didn't bleed it properly (or at all). Check the fluid level first, and then bleed it. (The bleeder valve is on the slave cylinder, and you bleed it just like brakes.) If you don't feel comfortable bleeding it yourself, take it back to the 2nd shop and ask them to do it, which they should have done when they repaired and filled it.

There are only a couple of ounces worth of fluid in the clutch system, so it doesn't take much of a leak to put you out of commission.

And BTW, I would go back to the 1st shop and tell them about the leaking fitting, and ask them why they don't think they're responsible for tightening all the connections properly. What if it had been a brake line instead of the clutch line? Remind them that their insurance company may be interested in this.

Talked to the 2nd shop guy and he said yes he did bleed the system. Didn't check the fluids as the I was already late to work because pf this and didn't have time. He's going to my house to check it out today.

Haven't called the 1st shop back yet, just in case their mistake has messed up something else, want a whole bill for them to cover first.

Clutch was replaced with Exedy OEM about 6 months before the motor went out on me. The 1st shop had it about 6.5 months because of blah blah blah, sob sob sob. Never had a problem other than that before he got a hold of it.

Already check the mount to make sure it wasn't cracked. Unless I looked at the wrong spot (Upper left hand side near the fuse box) it wasn't. Spring's still in place and pretty sure that's the only reason it is coming back 1/3 of the way. Anyway to adjust the pedal you guys know of? Maybe I need to go bleed it myself to make sure it got done right.
