93 pickup 22re not going into 3rd and 4th

Hey, guys. I have. 2 part question. Yesterday my truck started popping out of hear and wouldn't stay in gear. Now it's just 3rd and 4th it does this in. I have to force itin and hold it there. Does anyone know what this is? Maybe seat and bushings? Or I have a bad pinion seal is it possible it is low on tranny fluid and that's what's giving me problems? If so, anyone have a link on how to fill it and how much to fill it with? The truck has always ran fine and the tranny fluid is clean but I know it has been leaking for a couple months and had it refilled at a oil station about 8 weeks ago

Could be the seat bushing, easy to check. I doubt it though, you trans is done.

Seat and bushing for the stick will make it more difficult to find the gears and make the gearstick 'sloppy'. but it will not cause it to jump out of gear under normal driving conditions. Ill put my money on the synchros being worn out and possibly the detent pins/spring and rollers being stuffed aswel. Did it grind and carry on when selecting gears before it started jumping out? Low oil wont help things either. That will lead to premature bearing, gear and synchro wear/failure aswel.

Time to get that trans out and rebuild or replace it

A mech tried to tell me my "synchros" were bad, however, my tranny has never slipped or Grinded gears even with this issue! Thats why i was surprised the mech would tell me my tranny was shot, when youre trying to sell people on rebuilds i guess pessimistic is the way to go. However, "synchros"at 170xxx i doubt it, very low failure rate on these trannys. Not to mention i baby this thing. It was the seat and bushing. Opened her up and it was legit MUSH! put a new one in and she was right as rain. but not after i drove all the way across OREGON this am 4 hours both ways to get a new tranny for 300. Now i have 2 trannys i guess!

Wow the seat and bushing must have been non-existant for it to cause it to jump out of gear...but it should have continued to do it in all gears. The weight of the stick and knob must have been enough to pull the synchro sleeve off of the synchro and gear, but normally the back cut design of the teeth on synchro assembly is enough to keep the gear engaged when under load. Im unsure if these boxes have a spring and detent setup on the shift rails to help hold the gears aswel but given how easily it was jumping out...im guessing not. Normally 2nd gear is the first synchro to go in any gearbox...and a gearbox can go through alot of abuse in 170000miles. Mechanics always err on the side of caution because we cant tell how the owner of the vehicle drives or treats their vehicle.

It was literally like clay. yeah, my rig has had one owner before me, all documentation, and is driven with lots of care and according to my Toyota dealership, they said the failure rates on these transmissions were very low. my father in law has one with 389000 on it. And it wouldn't "completely" prevent me. id just have to hold it in. This is why i do my own work, Every time i take it to a mechanic its always the end of the world. then it winds up taking 1 to 2 hours of my time and 1/5 the money. Thank god for you guys and youtube!! thanks, man.

Did the mechanic actually test drive it or even inspect it? Or was it an over the phone diagnostic?

Ill bet the stick felt like it was in neutral even when it was in gear haha

Always go for the cheap fix first.

Funny how a worn bushing can cause it to jump out of gear and shift hard.

Most other times it is worn bearings just allowing things to move just enough

Yeah, i always have to learn the hard way! Next time ill go with my instincts. Also, the mech did drive it around and inspect the vehicle. also it is important to note that if you try to shift a tranny without the seat it will go into every gear but 3 and 4th for whatever reason, i took the seat out of my new transmission just for education sake and sure enough it wouldnt go into 3rd or 4th either. Also, any advice on how to prolong the life of a trans? tips, tricks oils, etc?

Check out Clutch Braket Fatigue on the forums. My 90' 22RE couldn't get into 1st, 2nd or 3rd gear because the clutch bracket was splitting. Just check under the dash from the floor board and look up to the clutch and notice if it's cracked or not.
