I'm back guys, haven't had any major issues .. thanks to these forums I've corrected my surging idle, correctly chose the right oil for oil change and found out about a vacuum leak...

Now another little annoyance has came up.. I live in WAshington so it's about 15 degrees right now.. I've noticed when I start up my truck , I let it warm up for a bit.. then drive, 5 minutes into driving on the high way on 5th gear, my temp goes all the way up nearly overheating. If I let the pedal go and drop My speed the temp goes down to about a quarter and it's smooth sailing from there.. it's never actually reached the maximum heating temp..

What could this be ??? 92 yota 4x4 4cyl manual. . Thanks for all your help guys

I'd guess cooling system, either radiator or thermostat. Since they're not that expensive I'd replace the thermostat and put fresh coolant in. If that didn't do it then next step would be radiator. I suppose you could just replace all at same time if you have the budget. Usually those are the fix.

Temp overshoot after cold start is fairly common on 22res'.

If your cooling system is generally sound and coolant is fresh, you may find that a Toyota two stage thermostat will fix your trouble.

....and a bad radiator cap may be in play too.

That would be my guess too. Since the truck is new to you there's also no harm in replacing your thermostat cap either. Be aware that most of what you can get locally is now junk including my old reliable Stant. Try to get the factory radiator cap
, or maybe Sankei.

Question: “Why does my engine temp go all the way up to the red before it comes back down to the middle of the gauge after I start it up in the morning. It only does this when the engine is cold and once it warms up it seems to operate normally. Could it be as simple as a stuck thermostat?”

“What happens on the 22R and 22RE engine, when the coolant goes through the heater core it gets cooled off enough that when it gets dumped back in on top of the t-stat it shuts it. Therefore the temperature in the engine continues to go up. The Toyota two stage thermostat has two valves in it, one opens at the regular temp, and one smaller that opens at a cooler temp. If the cool water shuts the big one, the smaller one stays open. All this happens because of the lack of a by-pass hose, which on other systems, keeps hot coolant running on the t-stat.”

You can get the two-stage thermostat mentioned above from your local Toyota Dealer but it isn't cheap. Be aware that it is a 190 degree thermostat.

Also, sure you can get an aftermarket thermostat and perhaps never have a problem with it sticking open or closed but it seems that is an incredibly shrinking list. You sure as hell don't want a thermostat to stick closed on one of these engines!
If you want a cooler 180 thermostat there is always the OEM Toyota 180 degree thermostat made by Kuzeh. It might still cause the temperature overshoot but it will run at cooler temperatures.

Getting good heat from the cab heater?
I mean, is it blowing noticeably warm after 2-4 miles of driving?


Cab heater bypasses the thermostat, by the way. Takes coolant right out from under it and recirculates it back to the water pump.


*edit- and where's the coolant temp sensor?
