My tranny guy wants $750+ to rebuild my manual tranny. My mechanic friend doen't touch Toyota tranny's for some reason. My only real issue is that it won't shift into 1st while moving. But it does have 300K on it. I'm putting in a 3.4 and would like to rebuild my tranny myself while I have it out. Any advice on this? Is there something mysterious and dangerous about this operation? I've done many manual transmissions before but never a toyota.

I have never built a transmission but I am under the impression that it would take a great variety of specialty tools that I do not have. Let alone the know how.

As for your $750 price for a rebuild. For a few bucks more, I would just buy one from the Marlin Crawler as there is NO better transmission man on the planet when it comes to Toyota manuals.

Dnstdad makes a good point, a Marlin is GREAT quality and will run you a bit more than the quoted $750. Another option is to get one from a pick and pull. Around here that trans would only cost you $80. It's just an option.

or double clutch for first. i have to. or try and rev-match it. double clutching is free. rev matching is not free if your really bad at it lol

I think the $750.00 is a fair price

about $250.00 for the bearing kit and $500.00 labor.

I had a friend he and his Father in law decided to put a bearing kit in a W56 both being pretty decent in mechanical skills.

I bought the 4runner there work lasted less then a year bearing fail I had the transmission rebuilt for $750.00 going on 5 plus years

If you have the FSM you should be able to manage .

If it was me I would get a yard trans to practice on run that one see how it does

Other then my first gear problem, and I have to be at a complete stop to get it into 1st. Sometimes it also pops out of gear in 1st but those are my only problems. I'm going to put in a 3.4 and I figure I'll be driving for another 200K so I should probably address the tranny. I'm tempted to just take the thing apart to see what the he double toothpicks is going on in there!! I never heard of Marlin Crawler but I'm looking into it as soon as I post this. Thanks for the info guys. I'd still love to hear from someone who has actually rebuilt one.

1. Buy a Marlincrawler shifter bushing for $11.00
2. Drain & refill transmission with Redline MT-90 Synthetic gear oil.


I'm betting both problems will be gone.

I like that plan! Do you think that this tranny will last another 200,000? I'm definately planning on repairing it once it's out of the vehicle. And I love the marlincrawler parts and syntho oil ideas. Thanks, very inspirational!
