92 3vze - BTDC timing - what's acceptable?

Hey guys,

I'm correcting the timing on my engine after a HG replacement and following the FSM I've jumped the two connections and set the timing to 10 BTDC, but I noticed that it sounds better if bumped up to 12-ish, and some of the posts here suggest it'll improve low end 'pop'.

BUT none of the posts mentioned if this will do any damage - setting it to 12?

Engine is stock (heads were slightly decked during the HG replacement). It runs fine @ 10 but just sounded a little smoother @ 12...

It does stumble a bit when NOT under load, but I think this is just do to old original ignition wires, I'm replacing them soon.

Hey interesting, just noticed on another post that altitude plays a part in timing too - here in Calgary we're around 1200 meters (3500ft). Should I modify my BDTC accordingly??

A guy from Colorado posted "When was the last time you did cap/rotor/plugs/wires and checked the timing? You need to be AT LEAST 10*BTDC, I run 12* with no issues (but, again, I'm at altitude)"

What kind of head gasket you end up using?
