Hello everyone. I just bought a new dually truck and need some help. I've owned a similar vehicle before, a 1981 Toyota Odyssey RV with a 20R engine. I think this flatbed has a similar extended frame, but with a 22R engine.

After driving home from the Tow yard where I bought it, about 20 miles, the driveshaft broke. Investigating, it is a two piece driveshaft with some kind of bearing in the middle. It separated at the bearing, so that the front drive shaft slides forward and doesn't engage the splines of the rear driveshaft.

My problem is, I live in Hawaii, and I've called around and no one has another used driveshaft.

What I need you guys' help with is to figure out what I need to get. The bearing, a new shaft? In other words can someone explain to me why it would have separated? What holds the two pieces of the shaft together. They seem to slide in and out on the splines in the middle there. Is it the bearing thing that holds them together and needs replacing?

Go to your local dshaft shop and get it fixed.

Hi Waskillywabbit,

I live in a country town of 40,000 people. I don't think we have a dedicated driveshaft shop. I'm pretty sure I just need to replace the parts in the center of the drive shaft.

I went to a local 4x4 shop and they told me I need two replace the entire thing for like $600, and started talking about clips and shims. Which I think is BS.

Just wondering if anyone ever replaced the center bearing, and could offer me any advice. Like if I need to get a Chilton's guide. Or if there were special clips as the 4x4 guys said.

(I'm having a hard time identifying my vehicle. e.g., I look for parts online and I have to choose between pickup, or 4wd, of which is it neither)

At the bottom. They say you need special tools to remove/replace the center bearing. Along with other reasons to replace the whole thing. It's not a Toyota thread so I don't know. There sure are a lot of center bearings for sale on ebay for it to be a non-user-replaceable part.

As yours is a custom vehicle, you are going to have to match the bearing and have custom work done. I seriously doubt you are going to find a bolt in replacement.

would it be feasible to ditch the two piece and have a lightweight one piece long mother made?
