91 5 Speed Speedo Drive Gear Retainer?!?!?!
91 Pickup 2 wheel drive with the 5 speed trans. I just bought this little yota a few weeks ago with the speedo not working at all. I pulled the gauge cluster and found the cable not hooked up in the back. Allright found the problem, easy fix I thought. Drove it up the road and nothing. OK its the cable then, checked the cable and its good, hooked a drill up to one end and spun it wide open, speedo hit 65 mph. OK well its the drivin gear in the trans, checked it and nope its fine too. When I pulled the shifter plate to change the pivot bushing and cup (Yea I know I didnt have to but good thing I did) I noticed the drive gear sitting at the back of the output shaft and slidding freely up and down the shaft.
My question is what exactly holds the drive gear in place and can it be repaired without pulling the trans apart? There is 2 shallow ( about 1/8") holes that looks like drive pins go and the gear has a woodruff key looking slot cut in it. The trans has been gone through at one point so there is no telling where the parts are. I have searched and searched but come up with nothing. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
