91 22RE code 31 help

I've tried searching but just couldn't find the answer. My 91 toy 22re has been sitting about 9mos.waiting for me to do some mods,I put it in the garage the check engine light came on looks to me to be code 31,which says VAFM open short of some sort and it runs like crap no power but does start quickly, wasn't like that when I parked it..I opened the VAFM and can't detect the problem, when I move it, it only makes it sound worse,if I unplug it ,it doesn't start at all..What else is attached to that code? I'm changing the wires and plugs tomorrow, then i'll be checking the timing after that, and IF and When the problem is found, how do you reset the engine light ?? Any ideas will be greatly appreciated ....Thanks

I haven't had this problem and thought Id been into every problem with a 22re! LOL I wouldn't go out and buy one, I would try to get a buddy over with his 22re truck and try his real quick on mine and see if that works. U can open them up and check it out. I have had mine apart a few times to set the rich and lean with different cams and fuel pump pressures. Carefully pry off the black plastic cover and see if it is dirty in there, if so get some contact cleaner from the autoparts store and clean it really well with the cleaner and q-tips. Then seal up the cover with some rtv, try and use the sensor safe stuff. It is rare that they go out so it could very well be something else. Hope this helps!

I have the top plate off but I'm thinking it's in the electrical workings of it,and unfortunitly I don't know anyone else with a 22re,I thought about a junkyard one but my luck is, it'll work for a while and I end up with a new anyways..That code 31 says airflow sensor and trying to set it lean or rich had no bearing on that engine light...

It's either the vafm itself, the wiring or the ecu. It's a 1 in a million chance its the ecu. I would check the wiring for any cracks or corrosion, clean the plug with some electrical contact cleaner. There's an arm inside the vafm that slides across contacts as the vane opens up with more air flow if it is not making a solid connection you could throw a code or rough running.

Yup, it really is that simple. http://personal.utulsa.edu/~nathan-b...33volumeai.pdf So before you start prying open sealed components, you ought to at least run the easy-to-do diagnostics in the manual.

Of the possibilities mentioned, it is most likely a really dirty VAF (internally), and you'll find that out pretty quickly with the ohmmeter test referenced above. You can disassemble it and rebuild it, but it's not for the clumsy.

But since you're going to be paying $550 (for the new part) or $200 (for the Autozone rebuilt part) or $150 (for a junked part), it's worth giving it a try.

But ONLY if your ohmmeter tells you to; you'd feel bad if you wrecked a perfectly good VAF only to find a broken wire harness later.
