I thought they were all under the rear. Ive seen them with after market swing-out style units that attach to a custom rear bumper. Never seen one stock on a 4Runner. I believe a may have even seen a stock piece from a different make fixed to a 4Runner.

The 90/91 4runners had the swing outs...

OP, do you mean to put one from a 2nd gen on a 1st gen?

It's been done, but the tire carrier is braced internally to support the weight. If you have the donor vehicle, you need all of that to do it correctly, or you will have to fabricate your own.
It's on here and other places on the net, but it might take some searching. The most valuable part on the 2nd gen tire carrier is the license plate frame. Hang on to that or sell it to Land Cruiser guys.

So, found the post on the install for the carrier on a newer 2nd gen, and holy lots of fab work - so does anyone want to buy a '90-91 swing out tire carrier??

Got one for sale...super cheap!!!

The biggest thing is to have the matching tailgate.
I did this on my old Runner and wish I still had it for my current one. The carrier itself is easy to brace on the inside. I just bent and drilled 2 pieces of flat stock to match the hinge, a few nuts, bolts, and some seam sealer and it was done. I did it by myself in an afternoon (with switching the gate)

Awesome build up man. if I dont have to do any trimming on the tailgate I think I'll just stick with it and make it work. If these guys are talking about hacking up the tailgate for just reverse lamps then ill mount some spots on a roof rack or something...in other words...who needs 'em!!! I' just DO NOT want to hack up my tailgate!!
