Manual or automatic?

When you flat towed it, what gear did you put the tranny/tcase in?

Id consider offering advice if you didn't type your whole speal in caps and centered. If you cant type on your computer, mabey you should leave the toyota for a profesional.

Yep, that's the problem.

Not removing the rear drive shaft has now purchased you a new transmission. It's in the owner's manual how to tow it with the rear tires on the ground.

Why can't the automatic be towed in neutral? What happens mechanically that causes damage?

Let me get this straight, to flat tow an automatic, you need to pull the DS? I'm assuming the 5spd is fine towed in neutral.

Because none of the moving parts in an automatic receive lubrication without the torque converter pumping the fluid through. Since you're in neutral, you're not spinning the torque converter.

the 5speeds have a similar problem but it only effects the t-case. if you so not disconnect the rear drive shaft the t-case will not get proper oiling

X2 on that. Theres no reason if you put the Tcase in nutreul that you shouldnt be able to tow.

x3 - with a manual transmission (which is essentially what the transfer case is), the gears sling the oil as they rotate, so if any gear is spinning its getting lubricated ...
