so a couple of months ago my 4 runner started having some horrible engine vibrations so i shut it off and had it towed home. last week i finaly got some time to tear into the beast and found what i think to be the problem. it looks to be some sort of bearing is shot and that caused the vibration i felt which threw off some of the accercory drive belts. the part is off and i think it is the main problem. only thing is i cant figure out what the part is called. the nearest dealer is about an hour away and the parts store had no idea what they were looking at. i've taken some pictures to help you guys out in hopefully identfying this part. the part inquestion seems to be some sort of timing cover. it has 2 pullys on it and also has the fan connected to it.

it's a ''fan idler bracket" it spaces the fan pulley away from the front of the engine to aid the fan that cools the engine and sync other belts. and at 230k theres no doubt you need a new one! make sure you order the one that has a spring tensioner! i can tell that yours is a v6 3vze spring compatible bracket by looking at it. they switched to hydro tensioner in 93 or 94.

RockAuto calls it out as "Radiator Fan Clutch Bearing Bracket " at $120 (look under cooling system). I don't have Jeff_099's sharp eye, so I can't tell if RockAuto's part is for/without the hydraulic tensioner. (They're usually pretty good about getting the right part by year.)

The part can last 100,000 miles or 500,000 miles; it is not a "maintenance item." But when mine failed it tipped the fan forward, chewed up the fan, and slipped the belts. So if the bearing pressed into the aluminum is at all strange looking or feeling, that's your problem.

[I have some indication that Toyota may not offer that part alone, but only as part of "Bracket Sub-Assy, Fan" 16307-65020, which includes the fluid coupling and pulleys. http://www.toyotapartszone.com/oem/t...307-65020.html $700!, so shop around.)

sweet! thanks for the quick response. Loads of help, i had no clue what i was looking at. the bearing is deffinatly done for. it gets stuck and there was some up/down movement while it was still attached. i'm taking your advice and going to hit up the junkyard to find a new fan, same thing happened to my fan that happened to yours. might as well pull the part from it too.

False Water pump, Fan bracket. Fan Idler Bracket, Fan clutch Bearing Bracket.... there's tons of names for it. and its a pain in the ass part. Go OEM if you're replacing it.

alright i think i'm going to order it new instead of pulling it off a junker. dont want to have the same problem in another couple thousand miles again. thanks for the quick info!

UPDATE
Got the part in and the 4runner started again. only had one slight problem with the new part. the 4 studs were either bent out or were not seated correctly when the part was made. one of the studs was almost 1/8in out of line! that was quite an expirence... thankfully once i got the first pully on the rest were easy as pie! Thanks for all the help again, this place is a wonderful community and full of knowldge i know i'll be comming back and picking your brains more in the future
