90 4runner acceleration problem

ok SO as I drive down the road if I barely press the gas pedal I accelerate...if I stomp on it...it acts like its out of gas.....

Here is what I have done....I have changed all the spark plug wires....I have replaced the air filter....I have replaced the fuel filter...and I have ran a few things of injector cleaner...I can get up to speed..luckily the max speed between home and work is 50 mph...

BUT...sometimes it run normal as if there is no problem..

I am at a loss as to what to check next...Ive talked to two repair shops and have done what they suggested..wires..filters..

Am I missing something?

not to be to technical, but the 90 3.0 has a VAFM ( vane air flow meter) not an MAF ( Mass Air Flow) same idea between the components but they are way different. and yes the VAFM can cause problems similar to what you are describing

I may have tracked it down to a loose spark plug wire at the destibutor cap? Question is would that cause that or is it a fluk that I think that?

I am restarting this thread as I was wrong about the loose spark plug wire....I have changed the VAFM put in a new one..there still is no check engine light on...some days the truck runs just fine no issues...but then it seems the next time I get into it the issue is back...could there be an issue with the EGR system as I have read else where? Please Help....

carefully go through the link I posted above. it takes a little work and hunting but it will guide you the answer. if the afm didn't fix it I would test the 02 sensor and the tps. both are problematic

testing the components being the key. not just blindly replacing parts and hoping for the best

I don't know the answer. I cant tell you the answer without having your truck in front of me. basically to test everything you need a 15 dollar voltmeter. since you think I am being a smart ass I will try to change your mind.

now that I have spoon fed you. get some tools and get your hands dirty. or don't ask for more help. come back with some results, not complaints

is your c.e.l burnt out? i have similar problems sometimes but mine is from my knock sensor and when a wire for k.s fails its retards itself thru the ecm i agree test vafm,tps,o2 and knock sensor with voltmeter and see what you got i did it and all passed besides k.s and also is your fuel pressure good? fuel filter as well?

Hey Badplasma,
I recently joined the forum in hopes of obtaining some assistance identifying what the hell is wrong with my rig! lol. I'll be honest, I hardly know ˟˟˟˟ about auto-mechanics. I'm young. I grew up without Dad or any auto-knowledgeable influences or relatives. So! I'm stuck learning everything on my own.

ANYWAY! I came across this thread noticing that your problem sounds VERY similar, if not identical to mine.
I own a 1992 Toyota 4Runner 3.0 Liter V6. I've had the rig for a year now and in the past 3 months or so, I've noticed a steady decline in power/acceleration. Didn't pay much mind to it at first, until it began getting increasingly worse. Now it is at the point where the acceleration/power is practically non-existent! And if I remember correctly, I don't believe my check engine light is on either. The rig fires up okay, but no matter how much gas I apply, the damn thing barely budges! Even flooring it, it only goes maybe 5mph! When my foot's on the gas it just putts and blubbs horribly, slooooowly creeping along, sounding as if it'll die on me at any moment.
If the engine has been running for about 20 mins or so, it seems to SLIGHTLY get better, but not enough to really make a difference...I can get up to maybe 10mph now. But the only way it will even accelerate is if I(like you mentioned) ease up off the gas substantially. Lightly tapping on the gas seems to get a few small kicks at times too. On the road, I have to gas it very lightly, slowly applying pressure gradually. It takes FOREVER just to get up to even 30-35mph....And if I hit a red light, or have to come to a stop...Well, I'm ˟˟˟˟ed.

I've had several people take a look at it, but nobody has been able to identify the issue nor make any effective changes. (All I've gotten is numerous random guesses of what the problem is)
So far, the only thing I've done to try and solve this issue is replace the fuel filter, check wires, and tweaked some things under the hood. I am VERY limited to what I can try, as(like I said before) I hardly know ˟˟˟˟ about vehicles! ...I know, stupid right? lol
Sorry for the novel...Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. I am out of ideas. :/

So I've tested all the things that was suggested to me and those all tested just fine... Still not working... When it's acting up I get a strong smell of gas... Does that make sense?
