90 2nd Gen 4Runner Keeps Breaking Mufflers

Hey guys thinking of pulling the trigger on a 90 4runner with a 3.slo with a SAS running 35s lockered and geared

Seems like a pretty good deal it's from a friend. Says it has an exhaust issue as it keeps breaking mufflers, as in the factory weld in the mufflers, ummm any ideas?

If you beat the snot out of most anything you can manage to break anything.

I think this is a driving style problem all those hard landings trying to be the General Lee

Then if he is buying junk mufflers replacing them every two weeks.

If the muffler is breaking what else is braking .

Give them the benefit of the doubt Maybe they have the exhaust system mounted to ridged

Probably the way he is driving or it is not mounted/supported correctly. An exhaust shop should be able to add support needed to keep it from cracking.

there should be a rubber isolator or donut at each exhaust hanger that goes between the mount and the exhaust tube/muffler.

It could be a fueling issue. hard to belive timing and no other symptoms. pull the plugs and read them. A dead cylinder would do it, provided the cat is gutted or removed. I've seen it in different vehicles where it will ignite unburnt fuel in the muffler and blow the end off. even bought a first Gen z24 that turned out to have a seized distributor advance. repaired the muffler since it looked good otherwise and less than a mile it blew out the muffler and I almost blew out my pants next to a cop, lol. if the cat is good, it would cook cherry red from the unburnt fuel. I cannot think of another reason a muffler would do that...... well, actually if the bump stops are gone you can bottom out on the exhaust pipe off roading.

Quite a difference between a cracked weld and the muffler being blown up from un burned fuel

Could be cheap mufflers with poor welds

Thanks guys for the comments. It could possibly be just a cheap muffler as that is what he said was on it but I'll definitely check the other ideas out as well.
