89 v6 idle problem??? help
Ok. need a little help.
I have a 1989 4runner v6.
when its over 70 degrees outside the truck wont start.
you can crank it and crank it and it will eventually start.
now that its getting colder here. its about 40 degrees right now,
but as long as its about 65 degrees or lower it starts right away on the first crank. BUT.
it idles at like 2000RPMs for about 5-10 mins.
after its warm it will jump between 1500RPMs and 2000RPMs.
and at a stop lights after you drive a bit, the idle bounces from 800rpms-to-1500rpms. it also stalled today,
I have replaced the coldstart timer.
also sometimes check eng flashs a code 11.
but i just had the throttle body cleaned about 4-5 months ago.
anyone able to help me out would be awesome.
Thanks.

Sounds like a problem with the TPS. Hitting brakes and idle bouncing at stop lights is normal if idle is above 1000 rpm (It's a safety "feature"). Fix initial issue and that will go away.

Please dont' adjust the idle screw unless you know for sure that's the issue causing the high idle. High idles can be caused by much more then just the idle screw. You can get away with that on a carb truck but not an EFI truck.
Especially when your getting a Code 11.
Code 11 Momentary interruption in power supply to ECU (electronic control unit or computer) up to 1991

is the TPS the throttle position sensor???
does that affect it on a cold or warm start?
and can you tell me about where it is on the engine?
i do have the haynes manuel, and a computer copy of factory manuel.
also is there a way to test it?? I'm going to try looking in my books a little later today.
thanks for all the help

TPS is throttle position sensor. Adjustment procedures are in the FSM. It's located on the back side of the throttle body, toward the firewall. I recommend removing the hood (4 bolts, 5 minutes)if you're going to work on it. Replace the lame phillips head bolts with allen head stainless steel M4-12mm long fine thread 70 pitch machine screws for the TPS. Also, if you don't haven them, get a mm package of round ball end allen wrench's. Will make your life much easier~

ok tested the throttle position sensor. and everything looks good and tests within what it needs to be.
ran up to autozone and had them look at the code flashs just in case i'm reading it wrong.
they said its a code 14
ignition signal.
should i just replace the ignitor coil? or try testing it???
