89 Pickup wiring nightmare

89 Pickup / 22re / 4x4 5spd

I'm helping a friend get his 89 pickup running and we are running into several issues.

Bought it with blown motor and with the main wiring harness cut in half. We swapped in a rebuilt 22r and picked up another (good) wiring harness. Converted it over to EFI (swapped a few of the sensors on the block...etc).

First problem - will not start, click, or turn over with the key in the ignition. We hard-wired the starter to a push button switch to test it and it cranks like it should. Swapped another ignition switch in and still get nothing when using the key. Another thing is that none of the dash lights are working.

Second problem - it only runs on ether or while spraying gas in the intake. Jumped the diagnostic box to turn the fuel pump on and we are definitely getting fuel to the rail. With the rigged starter we do have the key in the
'on' position. My first thought is the injectors but I can't be sure because of the other problems.

Any suggestions or should we just let it burn to the ground?

Replace every fuse and relay on the truck. There is an EFI specific fuse, if thats gone maybe your injectors arent spraying, do you smell raw gas when its cranking?

Thanks ~ We'll be digging into it again sometime soon. My thoughts are a bad ground so that should be fun to track down.

After searching I'm going to check the power going to the main fuse box - I've seen a few occasions of that being the problem

There are three that are easy to check, the one that goes from the middle of the fire wall to the top of the valve cover, the one that goes to the front of the block (passenger side if infront of the truck) from the harness going to the starter, and the one that comes out from the harness inbetween the upper and lower intake manifold that is wrapped in gray shi-t, that should go on one of the studs where the upper intake mounts to the lower.

Also there is one coming out of the alternator harness as well, check that.

We did buy another EFI harness.

I'll have to take a look at the alternator wiring because I recall something not being 'right' about it.
