I dont think it would be a dead on fit, but should be 'close'... I'll bet you will still need to swap a few connectors here and there.

I just remade my harness, connector by connector, and it came out really nice. I would recommend that route.

I found a company that sells connectors that are dead nuts on perfect fits for the sensors in my 86. only connectors I had trouble with was the water thermo sensor (had to cut a notch) and the TPS connector, everything else either in good condition or replaced with bone yard connectors...

When your inside the harness, theres 3 sets of factory crimps (guaranteed to be a rusty mess inside any used harness)... I HIGHLY recommend you re-splice, solder them, heatshrink, tape them, and lastly zip tie.

btw, it took me about 3 maybe 4 hours total of actual work, done over 3 days to remake the harness... its not nearly as bad as it looks.... Prices I saw for a USED harness was upwards of 300 bucks, and in the same or worse condition than the harness i had.

seriusly.... try to fix what ya got first. Unless of course your gonna drop 500 to 600 bucks on a brand new harness... then go for it.

I tried mating an 85 engine harness to an 87 body/cab harness, even though the plugs fit there were many wires that appeared to be identical but were doing completely different things. It was a big waste of time and effort. Not the same years you are talking about but definitely something to keep in mind.

stricly speaking, no... an 89 harness will not work.
liberally speaking, anyone willing to do some re-wiring can make it work.

There are differences between the 86-87 (88 even) and the 89. Some sensors have different part numbers / operating parameters, ignitors are different, ECU is different... list goes on. O2 sensors, injectors may be different... ad infinitum.
