89 4 runner transmission swap?

I have an 89 4runner with a new 3.slow in it and I hate the 5 speed tranny! The drop in RPMs from 3rd to 4th is like 1200 RPMs and from 4th to 5th is only like 500 RPMs. When I tow my trailer with my Joyner on it, 4th is not low enough to pull some hills and the motor is screamin in 3rd. Are there any straight forward manual transmission swaps that will give me a taller 5th gear with closer spacing between 3rd a 4th? Or is there a place I can get a lower 4th gear set to swap in?

BTW i have stock gears and 30 x 9.5 15s on the rig.

Thanks for your help.

Upgrade gears will be way easier. Get 4.56s

The problem is that turn 3000 RPMs at 70 already. I don't want to make that worse.

That's not too bad... 3k-3500 is about normal. Gear swap will be way easier than a tranny swap.

What is stock gearing 4.11? I know this seems ass backwards, but what about going to 3.73s or something along those lines to give better cruising in 5th and then I could use third for towing up hills at more like 3500 RPMs at 55 mph? I am sure if there were ever lower gears that fit my yota someone would be giving them away. :-)

I think if you dropped to even lower gears with your larger tires you will bog down the motor to the point towing would be unrealistic.

I have 4.56's and 31's, now granted I am 22re and you are 3.0, but 2800rpm gets me 65 mph, and 3200 gets me just over 70.

Going up to 4.56's will allow the motor to get into its power band easier, I know you are worried about the rpms on the motor. But when I had 31's and 4.10's, I couldn't pass anyone on the freeway unless I downshifted. Now I can hold 5th on the freeway unless I hit Tiger Summit on hwy 18 or something similar.

If you need help swapping gears or even finding a set, let me know.

Those were all the links I used in order to figure out how to swap gears, and a couple extra that folks sent me to make it a good resource.

4.10s is going to be the lowest gear ratio you'll find in a 8" gear easily....

i ran 5.29s with 31s for a while with the 3.0 auto.. it wasnt bad at all. i was still able to do 70 mph no problem. these motors like the 3000-3500 rpm range.. you get a ton of power out of them right in there.

And if you swapped to 4.56's and 31's, you will be a whopping 80 rpms higher while going 65 in 5th gear.

If you kept your 30 inch tires, its about 150. And it would actually help you in the towing game, not hurt you.

Ha. Nothing local.

Found a front diff for $50 in portland.

Took me about a month to find both diffs, drove to snoqualmie for the rear third and Bellingham for the front.
