89 22re loud top end knocking, not a rod bearing

Okay here it is, I was driving home getting close to my exit doing 45-50 in 3rd and my truck started knocking loud and i loss a bunch of power. when i got to the stop sign off my exit and put my foot on the clutch it died. i started it back and it was rough. every time i stopped and stepped on the clutch it would die still knocking loudly. I got it home and started it again and it sounded like it was coming from under the valve cover. I removed the cover and nothing looked or felt bad but it still ran rough and knocked very loud. please let me know whats going on and what kind of checks i need to do. Im hoping that its just something in the valve train or head. It definatly sounds like its from the top end.

Start by removing the valve cover and checking that all the valves and rockers are in tact, I guess! If you post up pics of your findings lots of people on this board will be interested to help while they are bored at work

I've done that ill do it again and post pics so you all can see. As far as I know everything that's not on a compression stroke looks good.

How, specifically, do you know that it is not a rod bearing/main bearing/wrist pin?

Well the sounds coming from under the valve cover really loud towards the fourth cylinder and its not loud near the bell housing or from the bottom end.

Well if it's a load knock and it just started out of nowhere...it can only be a few things.

Spun a rod bearing
spun a main bearing
Thrust washer/spacer
stuck valve contacting the piston

I would take a long screwdriver or a stethoscope and listen to different areas. Narrow it down a little. Either way you look at it, you’re going to have to break the engine down at least to the head to find out.

It knocks on the top end around the 3rd/4th cylinder. Sometimes it doesn't knock but comes back very quickly which makes me feel like it isn't a rod. Started when I was coming home on Highway 9. Was going up a incline and lost power and downshifted. Got up the hill and it started knocking HARD. engine shut off and I pulled over. I did a look-over and everything seemed okay, tried to start it and it seemed down on power, everything dimmed and ˟˟˟˟. Started but the whole engine was rocking and jerking bad. Got it home, and the knock was very inconsistent.
