88 X-cab V6 Frame replacement parts or Frame? What years fit?

Hey Guys,

Been a while but looking for some info. Wondering if the crossmember on the frame in front of the tank can be replaced? Mine's beyond repair! The cab/box are in good shape, the 3.0 is great but the frame is on it's way out.
If the cross member isn't replaceable, what year of frame will the 88 body and box fit on? Just 84-88 or can I get a 89-95 V6 and just swap the cab and box over?
Looking into doing this project truck for my 14 yr old son.

Thanks

Mike

The 84 and 85 is a solid axle truck and came with the 4 cyliner only. 86 and 87 are 4 cylinder trucks as well and IFS truck like your front shafts are. 88 was the first year that had the 3.0. For a direct swap you will need an 88 that had the 3.0. If you can weld in motor mounts you could use an 86-88 frame as a possibiltiy but you would need to see if the crossmembers are the same. Some 88s were 4 cylinder as well. I am not sure about the cross members being the same.

89-95 frames look like the 84-88 truck frames. I have been told the dimensions are different and not sure what dimensions are different so I personally would pass on the 89-95 frame if it was me.

No !! No frames for a truck that old.

You can`t even get one for a newer truck till all the warranty ones are done.

Just how bad is yours ??

86-88 Xtra cab or long bed for a semi-easy frame swap(same wheelbase with minor differences in mounting and such), 88 V6 Xtra cab only for a direct swap no mods(motor mounts and/or whatever else). 89-95 are too long(and the body mounts are different). But so far as I can tell any 84-95 horseshoe crossmember will work. Though the cat/muffler hanger might need swapped/modified to suit your needs.

Sarcasm? Nah...I think he means it.

Anywho there was somebody making them for the breifest moment in time at least. I swear to god. Brand spanking new solid axle frames. Identical to factory/OEM. I can still see the pics in my head. But I've long since lost track of who it was. I've searched and searched and searched some more. I can't for the life of me find them. Man I wish somebody could point me in the right direction there too. They may still be making them. I don't know why they wouldn't be.

But, sadly, if there's anybody here that can find anything Toyota 4WD related it's me. And I can't on that one unfortunately. It's a real bruise to my ego.

Somebody please tell me they seen what I'm talking about from way back when. I know I'm not crazy(not like that anyway). Who was it? And where did they go?

I could only venture if they were making frames they could not sell enough to make it worth while.

Quality control issues Taxes and Insurance any number of reasons why they want away.

I could see if your building a Truck with a unlimited budget but what average person can afford to spend in the area of $4000.00 plus on a frame then most likely pay some one to install it.

If it was there you would think some kind of digital trail should be around.

Building a frame without jigs and fixtures would be slow and expensive

What I'd read was that they had jigs. And the pic in my head is of a fully assembled frame hanging in a custom frame hanger. Which one would need to make sure all the vertical measurements were accurate. You need to measure from the ground up. The ground needs to be perfectly flat. And the frame needs to be suspended above it and perfectly parallel to it.

Dammit! Now I'm going to spend the rest of of the day looking for it again.

And on price, they were asking slightly less than 4. $3500 IIRC. How could they not sell enough? It's not like you can get them anywhere else.

I found something to back up my story. It's not what I remember seeing, but it's probably the same source. What I saw was posts in a thread somewhere showing a finished product. But until I find that there's this.

EDIT: My memory only served me partially correct. But correct none-the-less, and it was quite a while ago. Told you I wasn't crazy!!

You are a wealth of information, great find on new frames. I too would be interested in seeing if they are still in business. I getting ready for bed here shortly but will try to see if they are still in business at a later time.
