88 v6 4runner engine problem

I know the 3.0 v6 is junk but this deal was to good to pass up. This 4runner has 218,000 but the engine has been rebuilt once at least that is what I have been told. The problem is typical but nobody knows how the fix it. I am a 22re man and know them inside and out but am new to the v6. The engine when it is cranked sounds like it has no compression, but will start. After a few minutes it starts hitting on all the cylinders but has a loud ticking. I checked the compresion and have around 140 in all cylinders but 1 and 6 which have zero. I have not tried to put oil in the cylinders yet. My antifreeze is clean and not leaking oil is also clean. I am leaning towards the valve adjustment but have never messed with this engine and nothing seems easy.

I'd go with adjusting the valves and timing
and see where that takes you.
The 3.0 isn't junk, it just has some junk components,
namely the exhaust manifold design.
That's the cause of the head gasket issues,
which usually fail at the #6 cylinder, right where
the hot exhaust gas gets collected in the manifold
before the downpipe. But seeing as your coolant
and oil are clean and the radiator is full, I'd doubt
the head gaskets are the culprit.

Sorry I can't be of more assistance here,
but play with it some and keep us posted.

Checked the valve clearance on 2, 4, 6 today as that is the easy side. # 2 intake and exhaust was at .007 and .005 #4 .009 , .007, #6 .007, .002. I just dont understand how they can get tighter I would assume with wear they would get bigger. Any others experience this.

Valves will retract into the head, and kill the clearances, over time. The 0.002 will go to zero when the engine gets really hot. You can use a big screwdriver and carefully depress the valve cup enough to remove the shim that sets the clearances. Take the 0.002 clearance shim to dealer and get one thats 0.004 thinner. Some claim you can leave all those hoses attached to the top part of the intake and then remove the bolts and flip it enough to remove the passenger valve cover? Looks like you need to fix the valve adjustments and then run it awhile. Hopefully, the valves will seat themselves, with proper clearances, and the motor will run better. Put several cans of Berrymans in the tank to clean the injectors. Good luck with that 3.0. A good tuneup will be helpful.
