88 pick up. Need some help

Hey guys my names nick first time on the forum and I just bought an 88 project truck with the 3.0 v6 EFI. The truck sat for a year and the p/o couldn't figure out why it wouldn't start. If when you initially turn the key I didn't hear the fuel pump buzz like it should but if you turn they key without the clutch pedal pushed down it starts to buzz. Any way to run a jumper wire to make sure the fuel pump isn't shot? I didn't feel any frayed wires. Don't really know what to test/what to look for. Any suggestions would be great. I have a ranger and first time having a Toyota. Thanks

so when it buzzed did you try start it ?
Sounds like a faulty clutch switch .Fuel pump check connector on drivers side near airbox has 2 wires brown and green short it to test fuel pump.Or fuel pump connector on top of the gas tank has 2 wires Light blue which is the positive and white/black which is ground all you need is a positive from the battery to the blue and ground white black should keep fuel pump running.Any check engine codes?

there is a diagnostic connector next to the fuse box under the hood. Use a paperclip and connect B+ and Fp terminals. (the key also has to be on). The fuel pump should run like this. Also what other symptoms? Does the engine turn over? Is there spark?

It will start if you turn the key and let the fuel pump run for like 5 seconds. I don't think the fuel pump is running when it start sup because it will start and then die

What if u leave the paper clip in and see if it stays running? If it still won't stay running, it is not the fuel pump.

Does your truck have the "Clutch Start Cancel" button? It should be just below the driver's side left air vent. If it does, press it and see if it starts (overrides the clutch switch). If so, you found your problem.

If not, make sure your VAFM is connected and working properly. If the ECU does not receive the necessary signal from the VAFM, the truck will not start.

I couldn't get the truck to stay running. It will run for maybe 5 seconds and then shut off. Almost as if the fuel pump isn't running after you let go of the key. Where is the VAFM?

From reading around. I figured the afm is the thing that as inside of the air cleaner cover right? Anyway the door on the inside of that was froze in place so we freed it up. It was late last night so we only tried once to start it and there wasn't a change. Any other suggestions? I'm going to try again after work

That's not a good sign. I'd check it out per the service manual below. Grab yourself a multimeter and unplug the VAFM and measure resistance (ohms) at each prong as directed:

Try some regular maintenance items. New spark plugs, cap and rotor. Run some injector cleaner and if you're feeling adventurous, some Seafoam. Some people neglect the simple maintenance and then wonder why their vehicle doesn't run well, your previous owner might have been one of them.
