Alright so I just got this truck running again, after adopting it from an early grave in the middle of a field. It did just fine after I got it going and gave it a test drive, but the other day, I went to back it into my driveway, and the sucker wouldn't get into Reverse. The gears would grind no matter what I did. I even had a few other people that drove more manuals then I have try it and no one could get it to not grind. So I pushed it on up there, and there it still sits. Getting it back into first wouldn't grind but it was next to impossible. The only way I can get it in reverse is by turning the truck off, putting it in reverse, and then starting the vehicle up.

I've checked the transmission oil and it's not low. It could probably use a flush, since it's been sitting for four years, but could that cause THAt much of a problem? And so suddenly after it was working just fine? I wonder if maybe the clutch has gone bad? Any tips or points to look at would be great.

Check the shifter seat and bushing, if its worn out, that can cause shifting problems. You can get a new shifter seat and bushing from marlin crawler.

1. Your clutch may not be properly adjusted, and is still slightly engaged. You won't notice it on the other gears, but reverse has no syncros, and will grind because of the clutch moving things around.

2. It's a Toyota transmission. I don't think I've owned a 5 speed Toyota that didn't grind into reverse.

i have the same problem, i have an 86, and there is no adjustment.. so i welded a bit to the end to extend it. didnt help though. if you go to first then reverse, it helps. slows it down.

Might check your clutch master cylinder for leaks. It will leak inside the cab so pull the carpet back and check.

Sounds like your clutch isn't fully disengaging when you push in the pedal. The first thing I'd try is bleeding the clutch. The bleeder screw is on the slave cylinder. Use DOT 3 brake fluid. While doing that, look for leaks around the clutch master and slave cylinders. The master likes to leak on the inside, dripping fluid down to the floor in the cab, but lack of drippage doesn't mean it's ok.
