Are the engines the same? The reason I ask is because I have an 88' 4WD and a guy on CL is selling one out of a 92' 2WD. He says its a 22re so its the same right? and where the transmission lines up the same right? Eventhough ones 2wd and ones 4wd?

The engines are mostly the same with the exception of you will need to transfer your oil pump and oil pan to the 2wd engine- they are different on the 4wd because of the front axle.

ahhh gotcha. Makes sense. And the transmission should line up the same too?

yup. trans mounts are the same whether stick or automatic, 2wd / 4wd.... which reminds me, if one is a stick and the other auto, obviously the flywheel / flex plate have to be swapped as does the metal splash sheild on the back of the engine.
I'm fairly sure that the clutch is the same between the years, wouldn't hurt to check though.

Im not sure exactly. There wasnt much info on his ad. So im gonna call him today. On the ad it says make offer so whats a good price for an engine with 120k since it was rebuilt

Not the oil PUMP, the oil PICKUP TUBE.

The oil pump is the same between the two engines. The difference is the oil pan, and the oil pickup tube.

Hard to say... I picked up a used engine with about 80k miles on it and a 90 day warranty for 750 at a wrecking yard near here so I definitely wouldn't pay any more than that. Maybe start at 400 and see.

Well I called the guy and he said he has a couple people comming to look at it on sunday so if none of them get it then ill prob pick it up. He said the engine and the harness for 500. but I dont need the harness so prob cheaper haha

I am sure the 22re maybe different than my experince with the 3vze... but I recently put a rebuilt 88 3vze engine into my 94 4runner and all the electrical parts had to be swaped off the 94 engine to the rebult 88. Both engines were 3vze. The 88 pickup had totally different electrical connections on all electrical parts. The fuel injectors on the 88 were also different than on the 94. I would just double check that yota did not change the harness from 88 to 92. They did with the 3vze. But even if they did you would just have to do what I did and swap them over as long as the electronics in your 88 engine are ok.

The engine long block is exactly the same, from 85-95 22R and 22RE.

You always want to switch over harness, injectors, related sensors, etc. ALWAYS.

good point- on the 22re, the fuel injectors may be different between the years and the sensors may be different. could swap the 88 stuff onto the 92 and should be all good.

I did a similiar swap. I put a 94 22RE into my 88. I used the harness, injectors accessories, etc from my 88 since I knew they all worked together. I bought the 94 long block for $750 with 85k original miles on it and had to drive a couple hours each way to pick it up.

Which is a completly rebuilt 22re engine for $600. Chances are ill have to swap everything on to it (intake mani, exhaust, ect.) i called and he said everything is rebuilt, bearings, head rebuilt. It seems legit, has anyone had any experience with them? Its in Phoenix, Arizona

Yes sir that is where I ended up purchasing my engine from. Cool guys there, definately know their stuff. Might be a little intimidating when you get to the shop though. So far I have only put about 2,500 miles on the engine but so far no worries. My head was beyond repair so I needed a new one so he charged me an extra $180 but that is still dirt cheap for a BRAND NEW head assembled and everything. I just hope the engine keeps running strong for 200,000 miles!!

More and more I am leaning that way. I will go check it out this week. Do you know if they use metal valve guides, and what type of gaskets they use? Sorry to bother you with all this--especially since I will probably just aske them the same questions!

I read on their site they do charge for core, unless you give them a usable core. Also, it says 2 year warranty on the site.

They use everything that egnbldr has. So all their quality parts. And I think they use plastic timing chain guides so you might want to upgrade to the metal ones.
Yes they do charge a core. Its like 900-1000$ or something with out one, im not exactly sure. Yes 2 year warranty is given aswell. For the price though it is very hard to pass up.
