88 4Runner isn't running right after taking it Offroad and going through some mud

The truck won't rev up every time I give it gas. If I push the throttle it revs to maybe 1500 rpm and then back to idle and then back to 1500. Sometimes it will let me rev all the way to the rev limiter but not often. I have a short video of the problem but I'm not sure how to upload a video

After going thru the mud, I would check and see if your distributor cap is dry on the inside.

I have washed my motor several times and not had problems other then with the distributor cap. Since the cap is not the problem, is the TPS sealed up good and tight? Other then that I could only suggest checking plug wires and coil.

what else did you try? help those who may be able to help you by letting them know what things you've tested/tried. you did not mention that you'd checked under your distributor cap in your first post, leading to terry's wasted post.

I unpluged the battery thinking that may reset the computer. I also disconected the battery with the truck running and that made it rev really high for a few second and then it came down. I manualy opened the door on the mass air flow metter and that made it stall.

Look in the 88 FSM page EM-3(35 of the pdf), under ENGINE HESITATES/POOR ACCELARATION. Only so many things it can possibly be.

Could be water in the VAFM, causing it to stick. Or water in the EGR. Or both. Who knows?

Ok so you simultaneously posted opening the VAFM made it die. Was that with the throttle open, or closed?

This is my first experience with a 22RE and I'm not sure what the VAFM is or where it's located.

It's what you call the "mass air flow meter". But it's refered to by Toyota as a Volume Air Flow Meter.

Anyhow, yeah. All you did was cause a huge vacuum leak...basically. The engine should die...or want to.

Make your life easier. Download the 88 FSM <-- Right click, then Save target as.

Once the EGR valve dries out...it usually does.

Been there...done that.

Or just make sure its sealed off right. If you live in a place where smog checks are regular, you'd better be prepared to either offer a bribe or put the system back into place.

Yes. That and the PAIR can go bye-bye.

LCE sells a cheap 3VZ EGR block plate kit now. Looks like it has an extra plate to do the PAIR as well.
