88 4Runner gets 34 ten fiddies!

Well, these were originally going to go on my 84 crawler, but after mounting them up they were just too small, but they looked perfect on the runner, so I think a "mini" build is in the works. 4.88, or 5.29 gears, aussie in the rear, 4.70 case gears, bumpers and sliders. It will me the mild trail/dd/recovery vehicle that has room for me plus 3, cause one passenger just isn't that fun!

I scored the tires for $250 from craig's list, not knowing that 17" steelies are hard to find without 4.5" backspacing. I like to keep it wide and low, so I ordered up a set of Marsh Racing Wheels 17x8 with custom 3" backspacing. These ended up not fitting on my crawler due to a larger brake caliper upgrade. The dimple pattern (soft 8) just barely hit my v-6 calipers.

Can't say, for 2 reasons. 1, I rarely drive on the highway, and 2 I just got them mounted up, and have been riding my motorcycle while the weather is good. I've got headers, glass pack, no rear carpet, so a little more noise really won't matter.

Damn, Im thinking about those tires or some 255/85's..

But umm I just got my 33's so I have some time to decide..

Scuba, I think this is one of the better sizes available. They're just a bit bigger than a 33, but without the width of a 35 x 12.50, so steering components don't get totally destroyed. Plus, it doesn't take much lift to fit them (all I have is an AAL in the rear, and nothing in the front, yet, BJ spacers this week). And they wheel awesome! Here's a pic of my friend, Jerry's 80 hilux on 34 x 9!

that looks sweet! but i allready have a 7" lift and 35"s....

Very kewl!! Have you decided on which gears to go with yet? you could go with either ratio with 34's.

Looks awesome. I love the look with no lift.

Cool, my crawler has 3" of lift and easily clears 40s! Trim it, don't lift it.

Probably will go with 5.29s because then I can swap 3rds from both my trucks if I need a quick repair, and when this gets a SAS and sees some real trail use I know I'll want bigger tires, and I only like doing gears once.

There is an add-a-leaf in the back, and I will have to do a bj spacer, there's very minimal firewall rub. Nothing an angle grinder and a bfh can't cure though!

What does 255/85 equate to? 32, 33, 34? 9.5 or 10.5

Depends on the rim size. 255 is the width in mm (just over 10" wide) 85 is the aspect ratio, or sidewall height, in this case 85% of 255 would be an 8.5" sidewall. Now, there's 2 sidewalls, above the rim and below it. 255, 85 r15 would be 8.5 +15 +8.5 = 32x10 r15. If it were a 16" rim they would be 33 x 10 r16. See how that works? I had to have an old timer spell it out for me, but it's kinda nice to know.

No worries there, it's just a test fit. BJ spacers and a 5" shackle in the rear to go with the aal. I just want to hook up my DD, the 84 is still my baby. One day everything under the 84 will be under the runner and we will all be one big happy yota family.

did u have to lift it? i just got a 1990 and want to put 33's but i dont know if i need tol ift it becuase it already has 31's and it looks like theres room for 33's

As noted above, the front is stock, unless the previous owner tweaked the torsion bars, and the rear has an add a leaf. Actually, it's not an add a leaf, it's the very bottom (overload) leaf from an old set of super lift springs. The stock Toyota overload is flat, and yields no support unless the truck has a lot of weight in the rear. I removed that flat overload and replaced it with the arched overload from the superlift pack. For free I was really happy with the result. I got about 1.5-2 inches of "lift" (it really just leveled the old runner out) and the ride is actually a bit smoother. Plus, the runner already had rancho shocks that ar long enough for the small amount of lift. I can't wait to put in some ball joint spacers. The ride quality is quite nice, and it's a good time to check for worn out parts like the actual ball joint, tie rods, brake parts, etc.

Here's my hybrid pack, 3 original top leaves, and the superlift bottom. I didn't even have to remove the spring pack from the truck to install that overload, maybe took 30 minutes!

Reviving an old tread here. 34 x 10.50 x17 Interco LTBs are 8 ply tires. The 15' and 16" versions are 6 ply. That would make the 17" tire a load range D or E, and the 15 and 16, load range C. I wonder if anyone has any experience with heavy duty tires on these light-weight Toyotas? They weigh about 5 pounds more per tire too. Which would kill your gas mileage and ride badly on the road. But of course, who mounts LTBs and expects them to behave on the highway. -- Matt
