Dsal, its a Toy e-locker that I bought back when I had my 85. It was installed in an 86 rear axle but I never got the chance to do anything with it as I sold that Runner before my move from CO.

I need to verify what gears it has to see if it is something I can put in right away or will have to wait for a front end re-gear.

Speaking of, I keep going back and forth on when/if to solid swap. I been checking out the RCV axles and the controversy around them on the forum. Other than the cost, the only other concerns was about stress on other components based on the way IFS drives when rock crawling and potential for rolls when the suspension unloads, etc.

I know at first the plan is to Zuk/BJ spacer and diff drop to get 33's under the Runner then decide where to go from there lol.

Im planning SAS for my truck. Was gonna go BJ lift till my sister hit the bear with the truck. Lower arms are bent so working on getting stuff for SAS. Mine was good for light crawling with ifs but limited what I could attempt.

Sorry for the long delay in the update. Moved into a townhome with a garage, but space is limited. I have been mulling over how to deal with the engine as money/other priorities fluctuate.

I fortunately have some money coming up in a few weeks and have talked to one of our forum members on doing, at the least, a top end rebuild.

Since I needed to replace the radiator I decided to tear into that today so I can take it to a local shop to see if it can be repaired or if I will need a new one.

With the rock guard removed I could get a good look at all the oil buildup and fresh drippings. With 289k on the odometer I am starting to think a full rebuild is in order then I wonder if it would just be better to get a new/reman engine from a place like ORS, etc.

The 3.4 option just isn't cost effective at this time so its out of the running for now.

Here are some pics of my progress today

I will get some better pics of the underside to show all the build up and leaks to see what you all think.

Well didn't get very far on things today. I got the fan off the fan clutch so I could get a better shot at the nuts holding the clutch to the pulley. The back of one of the blades was broken off so looks like I will need to replace it.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/83338601@N04/7647416406/

I made a make shift breaker bar with extensions and a socket and was able to get the first one off easy enough, but the remaining 3 started to round.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/83338601@N04/7647419414/

Sounds like I need to supplement my tools a bit and pick up some WD-40 or the like. I thought maybe using some vise grips on the nuts but the only one I have that doesn't have a needle nose tip is super small.

What do you guys/gals think would work?

In talking to the wife about cost/options she got me back on the 3.4 swap. I am sure that is what is gonna happen. Will order the engine and swap parts from Toyotaonlyswaps and do the swap in myself. Gonna be interesting with the limited space into the front of the truck.

Will keep updating regularly now so you all see how it goes

Looks good, nice to see another clean 1st gen in the PNW! I have a set of Black Magic (search the no-cut ZUK mod) springs that I installed, let it sit for a couple days and then pulled them out, I installed 3rd gen 4Runner ones instead. The black magic ones will put you back at stock, I just removed because I wanted a little rake in the rear. Let me know if interested.

Also, I'm going the 3.4 route as well, and with a blown 3.0 that you have now, I'd say do it. No point in rebuilding or buying another 3.0 anyways.

Hey Cody - yeah I am pretty set on the 3.4 now. The current problem is how to keep 2 engines and the truck in that space with any room to work lol.

Its definitely going to be a dance hehe.

I may indeed be interested, but the engine work will be where my immediate funds will be funneled for a bit hehe. Once I get the swap done, will be sure to check back with you.

First of the funds hit next week so will do the first round of purchases, just need to decide what that will be hehe.

Any recommendations on what to gather first?

I think I payed like 70 bucks for the springs new, I'd let them go for probably 50 or 60, with the sticker included. And I'd start with getting your research and a list done of things that will be needed. You and me with the 3.0 5spd already have it alot easier than say the guys with the 22re, just because a TON of less mods need to be done. I'm still learning much about the swap, but a really good group of guys here from the forums are helping me though it. First best purchase would be a motor in my opinion. Keep your eye out on CL for one. Let me know if ya need any help or questions, I'll try my best or ask someone who can give you a good answer.

Yeah been doing a fair amount of reading again on the swap. The problem for me is there is so many posts on it hehe that I am having a hard time sticking with one.

The main bulk of money will be the check following this one which is when I will drop the cash for the engine. With space being as limited as it is I was just going to grab it from toyonlyswaps.com as some posts I read indicated that some of the accessories could be year specific and thus getting all the parts from the same truck was best.

If this is not so much the case then I probably check other sources for just the engine. I just dont have any space/place to put a donor vehicle hehe.

if you can find a complete donor vehicle cheap you will be far ahead of the game.
i know i did it the hard (expensive) way. at least i got motor trans and ecu from the same car.
toy only swaps should be a great help with the harness, etc.
good luck with the build. you will not be disapointed. love the 3.4.

Thanks Donomite Yeah I am really getting excited now that the stars have aligned and the money is finally coming soon hehe.

Would have been sooner but had a few rounds of vet bills for the cats (wife's kids lol).

The issue with a donor is I have no place to put it/strip it so sounds like toyonlyswaps.com may be my one stop shop. Sent them an email today on pricing to see what I will be able to swing.

The bolt in will be the most practical considering the space limitations.

Want to get my Runner running, so I can actually make us of it and start working toward its trail prowess.

I'll have to find the link. But you can have a rebuilt long block 3.0 for 1300 plus 500 for rebuildable core.

only heard one review from a member here and seems like a good deal. depending on when my motor goes and how much it will cost to overhaul. i might just pick up one already done

http://www.unitedengine.com/index.ph...mart&Itemid=55

dont get me wrong the 3.4 is awesome but you are getting a used motor that will need maintains

The motor going in my 88 has 220k+ on it (odometer on donor truck said, no paperwork saying it was ever replaced). Thankfully the previous owner or owners took amazing care of it, kept up with maintenance, and must have ran synthetic because under those valve covers looked amazing. I got valve cover and timing kit done while the motor was out on the stand so I don't need to worry about doing that for a while now. But as long as you get a decently taken care of motor, you should be fine, and might as well do the maintenance while it's out, before the swap, will make it easier in the long run. Well taken care of 3.4's, like other Toyota engines, can last a long time if taken care of!

Yeah, maintenance is definitely on the list of to do's. Nice site, but the 3.4 is still on the plate. The numbers seem to all hover fairly close to each other so it just makes sense to go with power/gas mileage improvement.

Thanks for all the feedback

Waiting to hear back from the email I sent last week to toyonlyswaps.com on what they have in stock and actual cost, etc.

This Friday will be the first of the cash I need for this swap. I believe the items on the list to pick up will be:

Engine Stand
Replacement fan blade (will the clutch be used in the swap or is the 3.4 clutch used?)
Replacement shroud
Fix/Replace the radiator
Body lift
Hydraulic lift

Will have to see how much of that I can get accomplished on this payday hehe.
