88 4runner 22re rain issue(tried searching)

Hello All,

I recently purchased a 88 4runner with a 22re. Ran great for the past 3 weeks. No smoking or leaking of any sort. Well some rain came into this morning and now the 4runner has some issues.

Engine took about 2 minutes to get started then had an idle like it was missing cylinders. Took 4runner around the block to see if maybe it just needed to get warmed up. Driving the engine had little power and then would get power like a turbo then go back to no power. Then engine would shut off completely. Did this around the block a few times made it back home checked all connections electrical and vacuum. All looks normal. Once back in the driveway the 4runner would not turnover and just cranked and shuttered then turned off. Decided to do some searching on the forum and checked some things like the ecu being wet and distributor cap.

Let 4runner sit for a couple hours while searching and decided to try to start 4runner again. Engine fired first go and sounded quieter and smoother than it ever had. Drove around block and engine started running like normal and then the engine cut out for no reason. Luckily it restarted and got back home. As soon as I pull in the driveway the engine died again and would not restart.

So Im thinking fuel relay switch or fuel filter.

My main questions is there a sensor that would be effected by the rain that would also be effected by being on an incline?

Any help is appreciated and I will post updates on what hopefully fixed my problem.

Thanks

Lots of chatter about the COR lately.... Circuit Opening Relay...

It sounds like it gives power to the fuel pump and is prone to moisture problems, also a few have griped about their Computers getting wet.
I think both are located under the passenger side kick pannel, the COR is up and somewhat behind the brain.

best of luck

changed oil and put some injector cleaner in and 4runner stays running but stills idles rough. I am going to change fuel filter and do the spark plugs and wire and cap hopefully getting a better idle.

Here's how Circuit opening relay work and where it is.

have you checked for wet carpet? it could be a leaky windshield or, if you have a sunroof, one of the drains for the sunroof. this would let water get in the cab behind the dash and cause havoc on the electricals. Hope this helps.

Check your TPS and TPS connections, at the intake and at the computer. I had a cracked TPS connector under the hood and my truck did exactly what you're describing every time it rained. I think when water gets in the kick panel it's the same thing - the computer should be sealed, but the connector isn't, and moisture in the connector corrupts the signal.

Today after about a week of solid rain I replaced my spark plugs then started the engine. The result was about an ounce of water spitting out of the exhaust pipe and now the problem is gone. I was driving around in the rain today and the truck didn't act up. Odd. :S

one reason the 1st gen 4runners run rough when it rains is because water gets into the cab and messes with the electronics. many times water can come in through the air conditioning vents if they are rusted out. also if there is rust holes in the roof, wind shield area, door frame area, firewall, etc. after it rains look under the plastic floor liner and see if it is wet.
