88 3.0 4runner A/C Compressor- DIY-able?
Last week I took my 4runner into an A/C shop as its not seen much use due to Texas summers and non-working A/C.
The guy ran a vaccum on it, things seemed fine, then he filled it (had already been converted to R134 by the PO). First time I used it, when I turned the truck off, I heard a sound like compressed air spraying out under the hood.
Sure enough, come to find out I need a new compressor as one of the seals on it blew once it ran. The guy told me he's got no time to do the job, and to take it elsewhere.
I know the 3.0's compressor is buried at the bottom, but how hard of a job is swapping the compressor itself out? There's no refrigerant in it as is. Any special tools required to do the job? Is there anything else that will need to be replaced, or can I get away with just the compressor? When it did blow for the one use, it blew great- very cold, no odors, everything on the cab-end seemed fine. I figure the labor is the killer on this job, not parts.
Thanks in advance,
